AARP is spending millions of dollars to "educate" the public about President Bush's proposal to reform and strengthen Social Security. But is AARP telling seniors the truth about Social Security and the reform proposals?

YES!
This isn't even news. The AARP lies worse than the tobacco lobby. Everyone knows it, even seniors.
Is the Pope Polish?
Is bread white?
I wife joined AARP without talking to me first. As soon as she saw what they really were, supporting the dems 99.999999999999999999999999999% of the time, she immediately fired off a letter, asking for her money back, blasting them for lying re conservatives, republicans, backing dems in the voting and told them to kiss off. She got a refund of her fees after she demanded that her money not be spent on democrats!!! They have not sent her a thing since, so we figured they put a big black mark next to her name!!!!!!!! YEA!!!!!
IMO the ARP is just a scam - A slick marketing entity that plays on fears of generally elderly people to garner 'non-profit' profit for itself. Just say no to the AARP.
Are they lying? Yes
Does SS need reform? Yes
A friend of my wife is in her early 60s. If she retires at the age to get a full retirement she'll get less than $400 a month. She's worked most of her life but in a lower paying career field and that is what her benefits will be. Not much to live on. Would reform help someone like her if they were young and in the same type of job. I believe it would. The system now as it is does not give a person such as my wife's friend enough to live even at a bare minimum. Let's fix it now so our children and grandchildren will have something that might actually make retirement the golden years that hard working people should be able to enjoy.
The AARP really gives its agenda away with each newsletter.
Is AARP lying? Just ask yourself this question. What's the chance of the average male retiring at age 65 getting back through Social Security all the monies he put into it during his working life? And if he dies before recieving at least the amount of his contributions what happens to the money? Even if Social Security was not going bankrupt, I would want change that would allow a contributor's heirs to collect any balance of contributions not given out in monthly payments.
Certainly AARP isn't telling the truth, but I don't believe the Bush kid is either.
Why not go to the retirement system currently in place for govt. employees? They don't have social security and most I know speak very favorably of their retirement plan.
Pumpernickel isn't. LOL!
Never was there a more adequate representation of the old question "Doies a bear sh*t in the woods than: "Is AARP lying to seniors"?
I'm in the older federal system called CSRS. They do have what they call the Thrift Savings Plan which is good and I am part of it. You have control over what part of the system you invest in. There are 5 domestic funds and 2 international funds. Some are high-risk, high-yield and range to low-risk, low-yield. It gives you the individual control over how it is invested and they can't borrow from it since it is not the government's money. It's yours. I'd be all for something like that. I think most people would be also once the system was up and running and they realized the potential of the system.
Because we're not of the *priviledged class*, as they are.
Yes, you're correct.
I THINK IT'S TIME FOR SOME CONSERVATIVES TO GET INVOLVED IN AARP AND SWING THEM BACK TO WHERE THEY BELONG.
AARP is in it for the power and the money. They will not hesitate to lie if they think it will help them maintain their power. They are about as honorable as Planned Parenthood, which has to push abortions because that's about a third of their income - without the mass-murdering of babies, it ceases to exist. Without creating mass-hysteria among seniors, AARP fades into the woodwork.
All Feds hired since Oct.1983 are is the Social Security System. They have a somewhat different annuity and access to TSP with govt. contributing up to five percent of their pay to TSP. In addition they can contribute fifteen percent of their own money which is tax deferred. Most of the FERS people will have great retirments with the SS part only a minor player. This is true especially for younger workers and those that enrolled in TSP at the start.
