I have been called old, jaded, a sourpuss. Far worse, I have been called French. A response is in order.
You know the dispute. Last week I slammed the president's inaugural address. I was not alone, but I came down hard, early and in one of the most highly read editorial pages in America. Bill Buckley and David Frum also had critical reactions. Bill Safire on the other hand called it one of the best second inaugurals ever, and commentators from right and left (Bill Kristol, E.J. Dionne) found much to praise and ponder. (To my mind the best response to the inaugural was the grave, passionate essay of Mark Helprin.) So herewith some questions and answers:
A week later, do I stand by my views?
Yes. If I wrote it today I wouldn't be softer, but harder.

Not for long.
Only if you've been up all night.
"Moderation, forgiveness and tolerance are the family values"
Tolerance is a family value?
I think banning you was a family value.
People come here from DU and say things like you are saying and they always misspell words. Maybe I jumped the gun a little and shouldn't have critisized your spelling but you are taking a very liberal stance here. Exactly the stance DU takes but with enough conservativism thrown in for good measure.
She can say whatever she wants but it dont make it so
I pinged you as he had directed that pompous lecture to you..I thought you might enjoy my bursting his bubble.
Too much doofen of zee boofen, ja?
What was the context of the banned comment? I missed it.
Dear Peggy: I guess you must have a maid, nowdays, and you have become out of touch with what we ordinary folks know.
Who cares what this old, jaded, sourpuss with the affected voice has to say, anyway? It seems she wants attention now.
You are obviously new around here. There's plenty of room for sarcasm, trust me.
As for my opinion on the speech,
"Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven".
The will of God is freedom for all of humanity-- which is only found in Christ. The question remains as to how we go about facilitating it. I think the President expressed an accurate goal, but the finer points of his foreign policy have yet to prove themselves. We will see a big part of the proof after Jan 30 in Iraq.
I wonder if she is jealous of Condi?
Dear Peggy: I guess you must have a maid, nowdays, and you have become out of touch with what we ordinary folks know. You are right. Anyone who has ever remodeled their house knows what a mess it is until all the work is done and the mess is all cleaned up and disposed of and you are left with a beautiful useful new space that once was wasted space. Liberals don't see the new space. All they see is the mess.
evidently we had way too much Random Excess
She is not listening.
I preferred to conclude she just had an attack of speech envy .
She deprived me of allowing her that as an excuse.
.
Peggy was lavish in her criticism of the President's speech. She's smarting from criticism of her own remarks about it. Words do have meaning, Peggy, as you have said, but your words did not convince me that President Bush's words about "liberty and justice for all" are a bad thing to wish for others.
