WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department on Wednesday issued a travel warning for Americans visiting Mexico, saying violent criminal activity, including murder and kidnaping, has increased in its northern border region.
"U.S. citizens should be aware of the risk posed by the deteriorating security situation," the department said in a public announcement. It added that the great majority of victims are Mexican citizens.
The announcement attributed the increased crime to a war between criminal organizations struggling for control of the lucrative narcotics trade. It said the leaders of several major criminal organizations have been arrested, creating a power vacuum.
"This has resulted in a wave of violence aimed primarily at members of those trafficking organizations and criminal justice officials," the announcement said.
Mexico has been a hellhole since its revolution in the early 20th century.

There AND here.
Geez - we just had a violent kidnapping that turned into murder here in Dallas this last week ... are we seeing the evolution of the openly violent Mexican gangs?
color me shocked.
I had neighbors that went down there. The man had a heart attack and died. You would not believe what the widow went through to get him back here and the money it cost her. Blackmail.
Mexico sucks rocks. The rest of Central America is safe and the people are friendly to Americans.
I dont think they are evolving as much as migrating north by our politicians invitation...and Americans weakness... imo
This bodes ill for the future of OUR border states.
And just out of curiosity, how many in those areas had a kind thing to say about Mexicans? ( I already suspect I know what you'll say )
You mean things in California might get worse?
I'll wait for the fed to issue travel warnings to the Mexicans traveling into the US.
Right. Nevermind.
Yes, and rapidly I fear.
Bribery will take you where you need to go in Mexico. Welcome to our turd wurld neighbors... er, open border trading partners.
I agree with you about those negatives being enough to not want to go. Even though I live close to the border I very rarely cross it. However, the country has gorgeous areas and could be a wonderful place to vacation (and for its citizens, live in) if their society could shape up. It is the attractive scenery and climate and cheap goods that are the attraction.
Wow, don't you think the Mexican tourism bureau is in a tizzy right now. American tourism is an absolutely huge industry for the country.
Anyway, this is a major diplomatic shot across the bow of the Mexicans to clean up their act. In diplomactic circles, this would be like a bunfight at a state dinner.
I think it's interesting that Rice was confirmed this morning and there was a news item that she would be quickly sworn in today (with a formal swearing-in held Friday for the traditional photo-op) and out comes this advisory.
This is exactly what we have been saying for decades.....
Living in Texas, we all went to Mexico to shop and mingle with the locals...in the 50s & 60s. Now I would not cross the border for any reason.... They hate us as much as the muslims do....
The filthy corrupt hellhole known as Mexico is awash in narco violence in it's own country and is also exporting here to the the good old USA. In a few more years you won't be able to tell the two countries apart.
