L.A. sheriff personnel to question criminals about visa status

LOS ANGELES -- Immigration authorities can train county sheriff's personnel to conduct jailhouse interviews to learn whether convicts are in the United States illegally, county supervisors ruled Tuesday.

The policy, approved in a 3-2 vote, also will allow county employees to learn to use a federal database of immigrants the government is seeking to deport.

Immigrants convicted of a felony and immigrants who were deported and illegally re-entered the United States are eligible for deportation.

The program will be implemented on a six-month trial basis and will allow county employees "to perform standard interviews of self-declared foreign born inmates" to determine whether they can be deported at the end of their sentences.

The board rejected an earlier proposal that would have allowed deputies to conduct the interviews after an individual was arraigned but before they were convicted.

"I don't want to see anyone deported who has been acquitted for a crime, even if they are here illegally," Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said. "But I have no sympathy for aliens who do commit crimes."

It was not immediately clear whether the interview would be conducted before or after an appeal.

Supervisors Gloria Molina and Yvonne Brathwaite Burke opposed the plan, arguing it could threaten civil liberties and would provide little benefit to the county. Burke questioned what would happen if foreign-born inmates declined to answer deputies' questions.

A good start

A pathetic, but necessary start.

This is only about 20 years late. Our state should have a 50 billion dollar surplus. Illegals and DemocRATS have sucked this state dry.

This is the same board that voted to remove the cross from the county seal.

Orwell coined a word for it:

doublethink - the ability to believe two contradictory ideas simultaneously.

We already know a third of all in jail in California are illegals, that includes a third of all our murderers.

If there are other unknown illegals in the pen, gosh, will the 1/3rd number end up perhaps being 60% of our crime being illegals?

Immigration authorities can train county sheriff's personnel to conduct jailhouse interviews to learn whether convicts are in the United States illegally,

So it is OK for the police to try and find out if someone has broken the law? ... and it passed 3 to 2?

Hey Zev, you do realize that 'illegal' means they've already committed a crime don't you? Well?

Lordy, what a fruit fly.

I presume this "enlightened" asswipe has no sympathy for the victims of the criminals for which he has so much compassion. Let him stand in the way of my protection of my inalienable rights, and he'll find a his head ventilated.

My guess is that Ol' Zev has his hands in the honey pot of illegal immigration, but the pot is getting hot for our dishonest politicians. Now if we could get the administration's hands a little heated.

My illegal immgrant story for today - my son's friend's neighbor picked up a day laborer outside Home Depot last weekend for some yardwork that needed doing. Afterwards the guy asked in broken english if he could sleep in their garage, having no place to stay that night.

The next morning the neighbors found him curled up in the garage, dead from causes unknown.

Its impossible not to feel pity for the laborer, who died alone in a stranger's garage a thousand miles fm home, but I hope the cheap neighbor is haunted by what happened for years to come.

The rank and file, those having to actually deal with the illegal problem, don't agree with Molina. The LA PD has been advertising on The Terry Anderson Show. They agree with him.

Do you support Rep. Sensenbrenner's bill to stop illegal aliens and potential terrorists from obtaining driver's licenses in the United States?

Yes 93% 3353 votes

No 7% 264 votes

Total: 3617 votes

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/lou.dobbs.tonight/

A BILL HAS BEEN INTRODUCED IN THE HOUSE:

Aired 1/26/05 LOU DOBBS, CNN

PILGRIM: The president's proposal was critiqued by Representative James Sensenbrenner, who says it lacks detail. Sensenbrenner's own plan toughens standards for issuing driver's licenses to what he calls foreign visitors; aliens must prove that they are here lawfully; the license would expire when their visa does; and the bill also calls for closing a three-mile hole in the U.S.- Mexican border fence.

REP. JAMES SENSENBRENNER (R), CHAIRMAN, JUDICIARY COMMITTEE: American citizens have a right to know who is in their country, that people are who they say they are and that the name on the driver's license is the real holder's name, not some alias.

PILGRIM: Sensenbrenner pointed out that Mohammad Atta, a 9/11 terrorist, received a six-month visa to stay in the United States, yet received a Florida driver's license good for six years. The Sensenbrenner proposal already has political battle scars when it originally was part of the intelligence bill last December.

Today, attacked by Democrats on the hill, Congresswoman Jane Harman today issued a statement saying the laws call for states to provide tamper-proof driver's licenses. She said the Sensenbrenner proposal will not make Americans safer. She also criticized President Bush for not demanding full funding for 10,000 border guards called for in the intelligence reform bill.

Sensenbrenner today rallied against that attack saying the current bill is bipartisan with 115 co-sponsors.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

PILGRIM: The Sensenbrenner bill also takes issue with the system where immigrants seek asylum. He says it's abused by terrorists, and he wants to allow immigration judges to determine the credibility in asylum cases so terrorists cannot get into the country on false pretexts -- Lou.

DOBBS: You know, we've reached a great point in this country, when there is a debate even over whether or not people who are not citizens of this country can receive a driver's license, let alone whether they're illegal or not, and the very idea that a president could be talking about immigration reform, but his Homeland Security secretary is saying, well, we can't really be bothered with adding another 2,000 Border Patrol agents to 2,000- or 3,000-mile the border.

PILGRIM: The good part of this is everyone is calling attention to it as much as they can, and it's very, very visible now, the gaps in the system -- Lou.

DOBBS: And our sense of absurdity is being overwhelmed, as it often is in Washington, D.C., and, hopefully, a few people's sense of alarm as well.

That brings us to the subject of our poll tonight: Do you support Congressman Sensenbrenner's bill to stop illegal aliens and potential terrorists from obtaining driver's licenses in this country? Yes or no. We ask that you vote at loudobbs.com. We'll have the results for you later in the broadcast.
