Democrats question GOP fund-raising Perry says soliciting for Railroad Commission nominee is proper.

Democrats on Friday criticized Gov. Rick Perry and Republicans for raising money for Railroad Commission nominee Elizabeth Ames Jones while the legislative session is under way.
They also questioned whether a Perry aide is benefiting from the efforts through the actions of her husband.
Republicans disputed the criticism, insisting that fund-raisers for Jones, who was elected to the House but didn't take office, do not violate a state law prohibiting campaign fund raising by officeholders during the session because Jones currently holds no office and has not been sworn in for the new post. And Perry is neither encouraging nor involved in the efforts, they said.
In a press release Friday, Democratic Party officials said Jones' fund-raising efforts were being organized by Ted Delisi, a top Texas GOP political consultant who is the husband of Perry's chief of staff Deirdre Delisi. The Democrats said Ted Delisi "will earn a percentage of the funds raised."
Ted Delisi denied that Friday. He said Jones has asked him to serve as a campaign consultant and said they are currently working out financial details. He will not be the campaign fund-raiser and will not work for any percentage of what she collects.
"It's no surprise that partisan Democrats would falsely attack a capable, conservative Texas woman like Elizabeth Ames Jones," Ted Delisi said, noting that she is doing nothing wrong by taking advantage of a "grace period" between when she stopped being a lawmaker and when she is sworn into the Railroad Commission seat.

Ted Delisi is full of it when he claims she is a "conservative" as well. Ames Jones got a 44% rating and an "F" grade from Texas Right to Life last session. She's one of the most liberal GOP members of the Texas House (right in there with McCall and Merritt) and authored the bill last session that would've stripped away the ability to elect judges in favor of an Governor's appointment system.
She's also broken rule #1 for media relations: even the appearance of impropriety or a conflict of interest WILL get you in trouble

Railroad Commissioner Barbie ping!
If we stop making those kinds of appointments, there are going to be a lot of empty positions on both sides of the aisle!
Looks more like Dr. Laura than Barbie, IMHO.
TxPing
Please let me know if you want ON or OFF my Texas ping list!. . .don't be shy.
No, you don't HAVE to be a Texan to get on this list!
Say Meeky, have you heard anything about Comptroller Strayhorn not running for governor of TX?????
I heard something this AM, but cannot find any articles anywhere.
Last I looked, they had nothing to do with abortion.
No, I haven't heard about that. But I hope she doesn't.She wouldn't get my vote in a primary, and I doubt she has a chance.
Who is this Jones, whom I have not heard of, replacing on the Railroad Commission? It must be Charles Matthews, but has he resigned, and I may have the name wrong?
Thanks for the information.
Thanks for your pings to me.
That's the closest connection I can come up with.
Thank you. :^)
Perhaps, but she's much closer to Barbie than Dr. Laura when it comes to brain power.
You'd know if you met her in person. She's about as close to the stereotypical dumb blonde "interior designer" as they come...rich husband who buys her seats in the legislature and everything.
She unseated a conservative incumbent in the GOP primary a couple terms ago by flaunting brushed up photos of herself and mailing them all over the district with hubby's money on cards that said next to nothing about her issue positions. Needless to say, she won and she's voted like a pro-abort liberal ever since. Railroad Commissioner is one of the most powerful statewide officers we've got in Texas (the guy who deals with all the oil and energy policy stuff). Aside from being a liberal, she is entirely unqualified for the job and has no real energy industry credentials other than sitting on a comittee that dealt with energy bills during her two terms as a part time legislator.
Based on Carillo and Williams' involvement, they're certainly aren't shying away from using the bully pulpit to back pro-life causes.
But if you're asking whether Ames Jones is qualified to determine energy policy, the answer is still no. Her "career" prior to a lousy 2 terms as a liberal state rep was an interior designer and has nothing giving her energy credentials either.
Yes - it's Matthews who resigned. Ames-Jones is currently a state rep. from San Antonio. She's best known as the main House sponsor of the bill last session that tried to do away with judicial elections. Perry appears to have been quietly pulling for that bill behind the scenes to prevent another X-Rod incident, so this may be returning a favor to her.
I think she's aiming more for Sandy Duncan.
