Vera Drake was not por abort. Have you seen it? It was praised by conservative critic James Bowman and Vatican Radio.

Mary Mapes was a highly regraded, multi award winning producer of news. 'Nuf said.

I agree on 'The English Patient.' I actually enjoyed Gump the first time I saw it, but it suffers badly on repeated viewings.

SIL was a bit of a fluff piece. But it was very well done, the sets, the language, the bit of romance.

And considering how dark many of the films have been lately, I found it refreshing.

Shakespeare's comedies were fluff. At least they would have been regarded that way in their day. Fluff can be exhilarating.

It could've been nominated in the Best Foreign Film category. The fact that it wasn't speaks volumes.

Thing about TEP is I went in to watching it expecting to love it; a sprawling story set in WWII, etc.

Over the years the embarassment that Gump won is likely going to grow; 50 years from now it will be "what were they THINKING?!?!?" deals.

It couldn't. American films are ineligible for that category.

I want to see Million Dollar Baby. Something about it appeals to me. Ray was an excellent movie. Foxx's portrayal of Ray Charles was amazing, IMO.

I thought the only qualification was that the movie be in a foreign langauge?

The rules for that category are insanely complicated. There were many other foreign language films that were ineligible this year. The Academy is going to revise the rules.

Nope. The country in question has to submit the film. It's to avoid problems for artists in places like China where getting nominated against their will can be dangerous for them. The goverments of other countries have to submit one film. The U.S. obviously does not submit its own film in that category.

It was recognized by Hollywood and it follows the same template as the "Cider House Rules". Vera is an abortionist even though she doesn't accept money and is as saintly as Michael Caine was portrayed.

"Duh! Because many people in Hollywood, especially many Jewish voters in the Academy, think the film is anti-Semetic."

Duh...I did not know that. Duh.

Agreed. Not many of those I would waste my time on. Probably not many (any) my whole family could watch. I balk at giving my money to so many of these air headed types. Passion of the Christ should have been one of the nominees for best picture. They speak a different language.
