I have a compilation disc, which has the "best of" from a host of G&S plays.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where it is, at the moment.

Kind of like the rest of my CD collection.

We have ALL of the major operettas on many different records,tapes,and CDs;not to mention on video tapes.Nobody ever recorded "THESPIS",when my parents' troop reconfigured it for the first time,since it was originally done and then burned in a fire;but I have my memories. :-)

You might want to buy the entire operettas.Many CDs would be more difficult to misplace. LOL

On the other hand I could probably hum the entire scores of "Swan Lake" "Romeo and Juliet" " Giselle" Sleeping Beauty" "Afternoon of a Faun" ...if you're interested.

Why do you like TOPSY TURVY? Didn't all of those "horrible" operetta scenes take away from the movie? You,after all,have NO interest in G&S.Why did you see the movie in the first place? Are you a masochist? I never see anything I have no interest in. ;^)

Hey nopardons, guess what show I'm currently involved in?

Not a lyrical, melodic bar of Gilbert or Sullivan in sight! I'm doing Sweeney Todd - Stephen Sondheim. Interesting, and vocally quite an atonal (in parts) challenge.

To each their own, I guess. But the political/social satire of Gilbert and Sullivan continues to elate me - over 100 years on.

G&S also have beautiful melodies, with gorgeous scoring. 'Sorry Her Lot' from Pinafore is one of the most plaintiff comedic pieces I've ever heard.

Ok, the volume of scores produced by the partnership for D'Oyly Carte in such a short period of time, may smack of production line musical theatre (for it's time)....but the melodies last, and the comedy within the vocal dialogue - and the clever use of words - is astounding.

Count me among the G&S fans of Freerepublic.

I'm finding the show an interesting challenge...funny enough. If only to prove that I have a decent ear, and can still sing an atonal alto line without going flat. (Ha! Can't say the same for some of our tenors....but we have only started rehearsing) *L*

Not much cheer...although, the black comedy of this piece appeals to me.

Will let you know how it goes.

For a semi-amateur Society we've a 21 piece orchestra - which is quite big, which may help the production.

Well I didn't expect people to include art films! You are correct, those fine films meet my filter.

'80s are practically another era. POTC 2004 $371MM. Fat Wedding 2002 $241MM (Signs 2002 $238MM and no nominations).

POTC was embraced by millions. $371:$241 is a significant difference, in my opinion, especially for a film intended to be "serious". This field is not so strong that it should be missing from all major awards. Not that box office should drive awards, but why "Titanic" and not POTC?

Not intended to start a battle over "Titanic" (take SIL if you wish) - but meant as an example - it is "Pop" - why is one group's weak Pop date movie over-nominated, but another group's "Pop"ular movie under-nominated?

There is a reason, and it is not that "Titanic" is so fantastic, or "The Aviator" is such a tour de force that it must be nominated.

Maybe they should have entered under documentary. Or foreign language.

There has NEVER been a better satirist than Gilbert and his word usage should be required learning of all children,from the first grade on.And Sullivan never wrote as well,as he did for those operettas. Nobody listens/plays/sings any of his other music now,except for "ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS". "THE LOST CORD"? How many have ever heard anything other than the parody;if that? The grand opera "IVANHOE"? I don't think that's ever been performed after the first go round.

People are making way too much of this. It's really just a case of five other films getting more votes. It's not a snub. For all we know it came in 6th place behind 5th by one vote. And let me say that cinematography is more important to a film then acting. A film can work with bad acting but if it's badly lit...forget about it.

I've seen "SWEENY TODD" twice,so I know exactly what you're talking about.It isn't easy on the singers,but I do like the story.It's a bit forced in places,though,and a bit off factually.

That's an IMPRESSIVE orchestra you have there!

Gump just suffers from comparison with Pulp Fiction. And by beating Pulp Fiction, it makes it even worse. Gump is a great flick. Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece. They are both great as films - maybe it is the energy of PF that keeps it on my Tivo all the time.

Sullivan wrote the only English music of his day worth talking about. He was certainly influenced by Donizetti and Offenbach but had a lyrical gift all his own. No one set English words to music better then did. No one.

Sullivan's use of Offenbachlike and Donizettilike and Wagnerlike themes in the operettas was on purpose;especially the Wagnerian parody for "IOLANTHE".
