January 25, 2005 -- A former Republican legislator who's looking to challenge Mayor Bloomberg claims Hizzoner's aides tried to buy him off with a six-figure job.

"There's no question in my mind the offer was made so I wouldn't run," said Tom Ognibene, a former Queens city councilman who's threatening to enter a Republican primary against Bloomberg.

Bill Cunningham, the mayor's communication director, said a meeting this month between Ognibene and two Bloomberg aides was routine and scheduled before Ognibene hinted he might run.

I don't know of anyone who likes Bloomberge. His approval rating seems too high.

Bloomburg is an obnoxious, whining little Gurlie-man and as much of a Republican as is Tom Kane or John McCain or Lincoln Chaffee.

I'd rather see a genuine DemocRat in there than this fifth columnist Democrat who masquerdes as a Republican.

Bloomberg is the worse thing to hit NYC since Dinkins.

Good, I hope that Bloomberg gets canned from his job. He's no Republican and we need to start cleaning house on these "moderates" and putting in real conservatives!

Actually, Bloomberg isn't even in the same category as the RINOs you listed -- he was a lifelong Dem who switched to the GOP just before the Mayoral election in 2001 because he would not have gotten the Dem nomination.

I'd say that philosophically he is.

The others are life-long Repubs who think like Dems.

So you would rather have Dinkins in office? Bloomberg took alot of crap this year and as bad as he is, he is still better than what we could have wound up with. It's not like he walked into a job where everything was hunky dory.

Yeah. I'd rather see Dinkins in there, if he's the only alternative the leftist clones in the Five Boroughs can produce.

People like Bloomberg corrupt the National Republican gene pool by lending credibility to their outrageous political views.

You could do worse than to be bought off by a billionaire.

Wishing and voting for a rat over a rino is exactly the type of thinking that held us down for so many years. We don't need a touch down on every play. We just need to keep making first downs. However annoying Bloomberg is, he is 100 times better than any rat.

Well, considering that the only mayor we've had after Dinkins and prior to Bloomberg is Rudy, I suppose that's an accurate statement. However, those of us who actually live here and spend time in NYC know that it can get worse. MUCH worse. How much time do you spend here?

You have no idea what NYC is like, do you? Right now, it is impossible to get a real conservative elected here. So, many of us believe that it's preferable to have a RINO than hardcore leftist (Fernando Ferrer, the likely 'Rat nominee thus far) who sucks Sharpton's butt, would not stay tough on crime and doesn't give a crap about business.
