The best thing would be if they would all just admit that Social Security withholding is treated by the Federal Government as just one more source of tax revenue, and all future retirees, just like all past retirees receiveing Social Security will be funded by other taxes or by government borrowing. Then at least people might look at whether this is a tax they want to pay, and whether this is a welfare benefit that is creating or detracting from the general welfare. I know my answer.

One of the reasons a lot of people support SS is that it's true, many even with high incomes don't save for retirement. I would love to do away with SS entirely, as long as we cut off welfare to seniors as well. That way, those who didn't save for retirement won't suck off the gov't teat another way.
