'Hook 'em, 'horns' gesture lost in translation Associated Press
OSLO, Norway President Bush's "Hook 'em, 'horns" salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan.
That's what it means in the Nordics when you throw up the right hand with the index and pinky fingers raised, a gesture popular among heavy metal groups and their fans in the region.
"Shock greeting from Bush daughter," a headline in the Norwegian Internet newspaper Nettavisen said above a photograph of Bush's daughter Jenna, smiling and showing the sign.
For Texans, the gesture is a sign of love for the University of Texas Longhorns, whose fans are known to shout out "Hook 'em, 'horns!" at sporting events.
Bush, a former Texas governor, and his family made the sign to greet the Longhorn marching band as it passed during the inaugural parade through Washington during Thursday's festivities, Norway's largest newspaper, Verdens Gang, explained to its readers.
Seems with Euroweenies everything gets lost, such as their soveriegnty, their will to fight, their intelligence, and nearly everthing else.
everthing=everything
The Norweinies need to get out more.
anyone got a pic?
As a UT alumni, this is truly not only hysterically funny, but the epitome of Shakespeare's "Much ado about nothing".
Gee, I hope they get can over it--don't want Norway mad at us.
Guess it's time for a few..."know what the hell were talk'in about" classes in Norway......
Now you say that but, a couple of years ago I saw Ozzy Osbourne interviewed on British TV a clip was shown of a US TV preacher (dunno his name) complaining about exactly the same hand signal which the fans apparantly use at Ozzy concerts. I think he said something like,
"...and I saw forty thousand teenagers make the sign of the devil with their hands...", then he did the hand signal.
Maybe the concert was in Texas and they were all Longhorns fans?
Oops, sorry, I replied to the wrong post
I do believe it is a sign language attempt at "I love you".
So you guys assume that people in Norway would know the sign of the Texas University Longhorns?
I suppose everyone outside the US (or even Texas, dunno) can only assume that he is making a Satan's hand gesture for fun.
PS: Not that, when I would be a reporter, I would spend one phrase about in the newspaper...
terrifying...
In 50 years, when this handsign isn't associated with the Texas Longhorns anymore, urban legends and conspiracy theories will florish around these pictures.
No, in ASL this is about as far from "love" as "seat" is from "sh*t".
Even further, in fact, because that is the ASL for sh*t in some regions.
Amazing how our press and "leading" classes can be humiliating for us Europeans at times. But who cares of what they're hurted by anyway?? America'd better ignore them. Rest assured that ordinary guys here just love the "hook'em horns" and all that blunt next-door guy style of that good Dubya of yours! These haughty rabbits are just disgusting. Sad to think what we were and what we are now.
Have fun, squash all tyrants and let them weasels look for new ways to conceal envy!! God bless
