About 6 a.m. Friday, investigators say, Williams pulled into the Mountain View RV Park in Bowie driving Holden's pickup truck. He went inside a convenience store on the property where he pulled out a gun and demanded money, said Carol Capas, a spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff's Department.
"He said, 'This is robbery. I want all the money in the cash register,' " store worker Richie Chapman said. "And as he said that, he drew a weapon from underneath his shirt, and I drew and fired."
"If he had gotten a shot off, I would have been dead," said Chapman, a retired New York firefighter who carries a .45-caliber automatic. "And I have no qualms about it, that I think he would have shot me."
Chapman "felt threatened, and pulled out his own gun and shot the man one time," Capas said.
Investigators said Williams ran to the truck and drove away. A short time later, as he traveled east on Interstate 10, Williams pulled over and began flagging down passing motorists.
When deputies arrived at the area where Williams was flagging down motorists, they were told by someone that the man had driven himself to Northern Cochise Community Hospital in Willcox.
Capas said Williams was treated at the hospital before being released to FBI agents Friday.

There is no telling the crime spree that this fine man prevented.
I don't suppose you remember the .22 long rifle revolver thread or the .45 auto revolver thread. There were a lot of posters who were confused.
All in all, correct terminology no matter who said it.
Arrghhh! That's sick. I am increasingly convinced that the MSM is humanity's number one enemy. The other enemies of civilization would have far less power and effect without their apologetic propaganda.
You are more than 100% correct. I was cop in '78 and was jumped by a guy with a pool stick who had 7 backups. After splitting my skull open, I pulled, shot "side handed, and went to finish him off (double Tap style), and would have shot my own foot off. Two of the guys with him threw down Saturday Night Specials and a third threw down a butcher knife. When it goes down you must have the ability to kill and NEVER doubt. Many guys on a range I associate with THINK they can kill, but would hesitate... thereby nullifying the entire reason why they practice.
Maybe he was gut shot. Always fatal, just takes a few hours to a day to die.
LOL!
Local media has it as 'in the shoulder'. Part of the TV interview showed a bullet hole in a cinderblock of the store. He was either using jacketed rounds and it was a 'flesh wound', or our hero missed with one round.
Have to go through AZ to get to CA from TX. Heh, heh, heh.
Thanks - I had been scouring the news for that info. So.....the b###### cold-bloodedly shoots a young girl to death, leaves her in a ditch and then carries himself whimpering into an ER with a flesh wound. Even Texas justice is not going to be enough for this one. A shame his wound can't somehow get infected with that flesh-eating bacteria.
"If this happened in NYC he would not have been able to carry a weapon and would have been at the sick SOB's mercy"
Yeah, and very dead !
Shame NYers have to leave home to carry a weapon.

If only he had been shot with the mighty 45 he would never have made it out the door ...
I would hope our New Mexico bretheren would have done all of us the same favor - if they had been given the opportunity. Who knows?
One thought that I have is that Bowie (shooting scene) is border desperado (i.e., illegal entrants and their coyotes) country and a lot of folks are prepared for whatever might go down.
Kind of like the Boy Scout motto, you know?
Wow. That's quite a story.
Never had to point one at anybody, much less pull the trigger. There were a couple of times I thought I was going to have to, but was able to avoid it.
But I have no doubt I could if I had to.
And there is one particular individual I wish I would have had the chance to do it to last May. He stabbed my sister to death, took her guns, drove across the river into the adjoining state and shot an old friend of mine twelve times, killing him as well.
But alas, I was 1200 miles away...
File under, "I shot him, but..."
;-)
Maybe he was like Barney. Only allowed to have one round or, er, bullet.
LOL...
I disagree. It is a matter of perspective. If you aren't prepared and there with a specific mission then you shouldn't be there. After that, forget empathy and sympathy. To paraphrase Patton, leave that to the other guys.
What about surgeons, EMT's, cops, etc., that witness that stuff all the time. Would you say they are not right?
