COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- Bob Jones III said Thursday he will retire as president of the Christian university that bears his name, ending a 34-year reign during which the school grabbed headlines because of its racial policies and fundamentalist views.
Jones' son will take over as president of the school in May.
The 65-year-old Jones, whose grandfather founded Bob Jones University 78 years ago, said it was time for someone younger and "closer to the present generation" to take over.
"I've seen too many institutions -- churches, Christian ministries -- suffer when somebody stays too long," he said. "And I've never wanted that to happen here."
Jones said he will spend more time traveling and preaching but will remain a visible part of the campus, as chairman of the board of trustees and perhaps as "grandpa" to 5,000 students who attend college at the campus in Greenville, about 100 miles northwest of Columbia.

Peter King (IRA supporting RINO) and the MSM did nothing but attact Bob Jones University back in 2000, but never condemn the communist symphathizers that peddle their dreck at Harvard (burn it to the ground), UCLA, Yale, etc.
Taking over for Bob Jones will be John Smith.
They don't attack their own like we do.
It says in the article, it will be Stephen Jones, his son.
It was a joke.
....Uh,.....which bible 'VERSION' will they be using?
The most readable one...of course.
The man was an anti-Catholic bigot. Can't say I'll miss him.
What were his racial policies that were so controversial?
That won't change
You mis-spelled "Friend" there. The correct spelling is "embarassment."
Condemning a branch of Christianity that he found in error does not make Rev. Jones an "anti-Catholic bigot" anymore than the Euro Trash Bishops who condemn protestantism.
Spelling has never been a strong point for me.
Supposedly, an Asian family who's daughter was dating a white student complained quite vehemently back in the 1950s about interracial dating. Also, considering the times as they were, interracial dating was a big no-no in this country, not just in the south. Heck, when I was a kid on Long Island, it seemed that saying your son/daughter were involved in an interracial relationship was akin to admitting they were gay.
He called Catholicism "Satanic."
What, exactly, would qualify one as an anti-Catholic bigot, if that doesn't?
And who was it who said that the "smoke of satan" infiltrated the Catholic Church?
Inter-racial dating was banned.
Then modified to be okay, with parental consent.
I don't know what it is now.
Don't forget, he also insulted John Ashcrofts denomination, before he knew Ashcroft was a member.
