FBI Grills Jack Kemp About Iraqi Contact (Oil for Food)

Jan. 19 - Former vice presidential candidate Jack Kemp has been questioned by the FBI about his dealings with an Iraqi-American businessman who this week became the target of the first Justice Department criminal indictment in the United Nations Oil-for-Food scandal

...Over several years continuing until 2003, Vincent talked to Kemp roughly once a month about his proposal to improve U.S.-Iraqi relations, according to Kemp and Lanny Davis, a Washington lawyer and friend of Kemp’s who discussed the matter with him and offered to speak for him to NEWSWEEK on this matter.

...Davis confirmed that in 2001, Kemp personally approached Cheney and Powell about a version of his proposal, in which Kemp and other emissaries would fly to Iraq and negotiate an arrangement by which United Nations inspectors would be allowed back into the country in exchange for a gradual phase-out of U.N. sanctions. Kemp talked to Cheney at a social gathering about the plan and was rebuffed, Davis and Kemp said. Kemp also telephoned Powell about his proposal in which the former congressman would be joined on a trip to Baghdad by Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham, and an associate of former president Jimmy Carter. Powell “showed no interest,” Davis said. (In September 1999, Vincent arranged for a delegation of Iraqi religious leaders to visit the United States and meet with Carter and Billy Graham.)

...Davis said that Kemp had put Vincent on the Marshall Plan committee because “he seemed to have knowledge about the Middle East and connections with the Iraqi government.” Kemp also said that he asked Carlucci, the chairman emeritus of the Carlyle Group, the prominent international investment firm, about Vincent. Carlucci told Kemp that Vincent was a "good guy," said Kemp, who added that Carlucci and Vincent were tennis partners. ...

I always liked Kemp; it will be a disappointment to hear he knew this contact was a problem.

Yes, that one.

Kemp is pretty cool. As I recall throughout the nineties up to 2003 we were in a "warm war" with Saddam, with no-fly zone air battles, protecting the Kurdish autonomous states, sanctions, etc.

Just "no big deal" that he's associating with someone who is apparently working for the Iraqi govt?

I'm willing to give Kemp the benefit of the doubt, but I'm also willing to let the chips fall where they may. I'd also need to see a money trail before I jumped to the conclusion of something shady.

I like Kemp, but I never understood why so many people here on Free Republic hate him or dislike him so much.

Did he do something that somehow alienated alot of conservatives or something or have some kind of view that was liberal or whatever?

"Not THE Lanny Davis?

Of course it is Clinton's Apologist-in-Chief, Lanny Davis. These Elites really don't have much of a real party affiliation when it comes down to money and power. I mean, the possibility of Kemp meddling in Foreign Affairs along with Carter and a host of other approachables who quite possibly were paid to ignore their outwardly displayed principles for a fee? Disgusting.

Kemp has been one big disappointment ever since Reagan left office. He's one of several 'republican' figures I wish would just fade away.

If Kemp did something to earn FReeper's dislike, it certainly escaped my notice.

Samir Vincent is the same guy Jimmah Carter was in bed with ... I wonder if the FBI is looking at him too?

Kemp blew the vice-presidential debate big time when he and Bob Dole ran against Clinton and Gore. For me, he absolutely lost any credibility he had, because he sounded so incompetent and superficial. I can't listen to him anymore without hearing that superficiality or remembering that debate...

I think thats the same guy who repeatedly warned Gore about Bush.

I'm not positive, but I think he knew Bush in college, and kept telling Gore not to underestimate him.

I agree 100%. Carter, Kemp, Davis plus any and all others if involved should face long jail terms. However since they are among the political class any involvement will be swept under the carpet.
