Teddy Kennedy was not relieved of his command when he sunk the USS Submarine Oldsmobile.

I served 5 years on a nuc sub from 1975 to 1980. It is SOP to change command after any "accident".
I was on the pier when a sub next to us was tired of waiting for the tugs to help it pull out so the skipper decided to get underway by himself and bump the sub next to him.
SUBGRUP 5 was on the tender above. He walked down and relieved the skipper right on the spot, the tugs came, tied the boat up and they had a change of command that day.

Any facts / rumor how he hit a mountain - uncharted or not?
We play crazy Ivan in lots closer spaces so I am scratching my sub loving head on this one. (no. my 18 year old daughter was not at the helm)

Reassigned. The Captain's command is in dry dock and may be decommissioned. I suspect the inquiry will take at least 6 mos.
USS SF ping.

Maybe he refused to comply with San Francisco's new disarmament policy?

Reassigned, is to be expected. His ship is in dry dock for who knows how long. Reassigned is no big deal if he is reassigned to another career building position.

The San Francisco was my old boat back in the late-80s. We won the Battle "E" for our squadron and ended the Cold War. That sub sure went to hell after I left :-)
Anyway, the CO had to go since he is ultimately responsible for everything that sub does. One thing I loved about the Navy was accountability -- harsh but always equal (very unlike CBS News). He'll be lucky if he isn't sent to Diego Garcia or presiding over a land-locked bootcamp. But if he's a good guy, he'll redeem himself. Cream rises to the top.

I think people are reacting to this prematurely. He's relieved until the investigation completes as a matter of course, and if no mistakes were made by him nor by people under him, then he will be returned to duty.
Right? Of course the captain is held responsible for everything that happens on his ship, but there's nothing to hold him responsible for if mistakes were not made.

So they name a long tube full of sea men the "San Francisco." Who said the Navy doesn't have a sense of humor? What's next the SS Fire Island?

Navy: He should have charted himself, if he's gonna decorate an undersea mountain with our submarine.

Yeah, and Bush should be impeached because, as the Jersey Terror Whores reminded us, 9/11 happened on his watch. He should have
known.
