Well, perhaps you should give Oscar De La Renta, the designer of the dress Laura will wear tomorrow, a few tips on designing. What snobby know-it-alls some people are!

It's the Texan Schoolmarm look .....which is very appropriate for her boots and the theme of the ball.

Couldn't help but eavesdrop on your conversation--
From my point of view (the view of a guy with absolutely no fashion sense, but who has an acute appreciation for the female form), the dresses look very nice--all of them. Especially Jenna's :)

Jenna was making the "Hook'em Horns" sign because the crowd, including the President, were singing "The Eyes of Texas."
For those who don't know, here are the lyrics:
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
All the live long day.
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
You cannot get away.
Do not think you can escape them,
At night, or early in the morn.
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
'Till Gabriel blows his horn!
Rather appropriate, given the war on terror.

Isn't is also an identifying sign used by alumni of her university? Anyone from Texas know?

The gown is by Caroline Herrera, who designed it especially for the First Lady. I doubt that she publicized an effort to make something out of style.
I think the silk reflects the light oddly for the camera. As can be seen, depending on which shot you look at it appears to be a different color.
I personally like the cut, and I am certain the color looks better in person.

The eyes of Texas are upon you, That sounds like the "Walker Texas Ranger" theme (lol).

Now, this is an awful dress - style, color, everything - not to mention the person who's wearing it.
