Majority of Americans disapprove of Bush's Iraq policy, polls say

Shortly before Bush's inauguration for his second term in office, and after he said in an interview that the 2004 election result proved that electorate approved of his handling of the war, a Washington Post/ABC News poll showed that 55 percent of Americans felt the Iraq war was not worth fighting, against 44 percent who thought it was.

Respondents also disapproved of Bush's handling of the situation in Iraq by a 58 to 40 percent margin, and 57 percent of the 1,007 adults surveyed by telephone from January 12-16 were not confident that the upcoming elections in Iraq would lead to a stable government.

Similarly, a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll published in the nationally distributed newspaper showed that Americans believed it was a mistake sending troops to Iraq by a 52-to-47 percent margin.

Also based on a telephone survey of 1,007 adults, taken January 14-16, the USA Today poll found that respondents were now more or less equally divided as to whether the United States should keep, increase, reduce current troops levels in Iraq.

Until September 2004, the prevailing opinion in polls was that troop levels should be maintained.

Bush also got majority disapproval ratings on a number of other issues in the Washington Post/ABC News poll: 52 percent disapproved of the way he is handling the US economy, Social Security (news - web sites) (55 percent), the budget deficit (58 percent), immigration (54 percent) and health care (51 percent).

Bush got high approval ratings for coping with terrorism (61 percent) and education (56 percent). In foreign affairs, environmental issues and taxes, respondents were divided.

However Bush's overall approval rating stood slightly higher than last month at 52 percent, and 55 percent of those surveyed said they expected him to do a better job as president during the next four years than he did in his first term.

The margin of error for both polls was plus or minus three percentage points.

When he denigrates the military, most of my family is in the crosshairs. Excuse my lack of charity, but he's not entitled to benefit from their sacrifices.

Bush's overall approval numbers actually went up since the election, but that doesn't make good headlines.

Exactly. The media is in a last vicious gasp. They are doing everything they can think of to harm this President. But Iraq is still improving and the election will take place and freedom will take hold.

You're right, of course. OTOH stuff like this gives the opposition in Congress the the green light to make trouble for the President--The Democrats, of course who need little incentive, but even moreso some of the less stalwart Republicans.

But with Iraq, what's done is done. I'm more interested in how the Iraq experience might influence public opinion re: Iran, which if one reads the tea leaves, seems to be the next step. Bush could have a tough time selling that to a public skittish about more foreign involvement.

I agree, and I am tired of churchy's prattling. Enough's enough.

Been There, Done That
Iraq’s not foreign territory.

As the drumbeat of bad news continues in Iraq and calls for a U.S. withdrawal begin to take hold, a popular cliché will get increased currency: that it is impossible to win a war against a guerrilla insurgency. This is the historical inaccuracy that Vietnam wrought. Americans assume that since they lost a war that had a guerrilla aspect in Vietnam — never mind that it was a conventional North Vietnamese army that ultimately conquered the south — everyone must always lose guerrilla wars.

Among other things, this ignores the American victory over an insurgency in the Philippines in the 1950s, the Greek triumph over a Communist insurgency after World War II, El Salvador's defeat of Communist guerrillas in the 1980s, Peru's smashing of a terrorist insurgency in the 1990s, the recent qualified victory of the British over the Irish Republican Army, and Israel's continuing upper hand over terrorists in the West Bank and Gaza. Most importantly, the insurgents-always-win school skips over the textbook example of successful counterinsurgency, the British victory in Malaysia in the 1950s over a communist guerrilla movement.

Ouch! Suddenly I feel all warm and cozy. LOL. I don't know what the temp is here in South Jersey, but it's a lot warmer than that. I paid the propane bill over the phone today, and the lady asked if the tank was getting low. Like I'm gonna go out and look at the meter? I wouldn't go outside if the house caught fire!

Bluff: Folks like you want to be insulated from news, if it doesn't reinforce your beliefs. As for me, I've learned in a long life not to live in denial, and not to hide from facts.

Does this mean she will read your post admit it's true?
