Palm Island Jumeirah, United Arab Emirates

Proba provides a close-up view from 600 kilometres away in space of the massive artificial Palm Island Jumeirah, currently taking shape in the Gulf of Arabia just off Dubai.

Designed as a prestige residential and relaxation area, the reef-like complex is built in the shape of a palm tree: it has a 17-frond crown around which is arranged a crescent, the back of which serves as a breakwater. The crown is connected to the mainland by a 300-metre bridge. Owners are due to begin occupying their properties by the end of 2005. The Jumeirah has been built from 80 million cubic metres of land dredged from the United Arab Emirates' Jebel Ali port, whose approaches are being deepened to 17 metres. The Palm, Jumeirah is the first of three Palm Island projects now taking shape. Swiftly following it are the Palm Jebel Ali and the newest and largest Palm Deira. Together the three Palms are set to extend the country's coastline by around 200 kilometres.

This 7 December 2004 image was taken by Proba's High-Resolution Camera (HRC), which acquires black and white 25-km square images to a resolution of five metres.

This is more then what it looks like. It is an intention.

And the world is paying for it.

Well, at least the kleptocrats will have someplace more defensible to hole up when the Islamofascists start the coup.

It is an expensive complex including Malls, 7 Star Hotels, Open Beaches and Investment and Residential Buildings.

Dubai has become a big and touristic city since early 90s.
It is modern, quiet and nice!

Yes, but can you see the intention of such a project?
The meaning?

Symbolism perhaps?

my thoughts exactly.

Kinda like, in the 1800,s when they were building the levees and changing the course of the Mississippi, Mark Twain laughed at them and made the prophetic statement that the "...Mighty Mississip' will laugh at you one day" - and it surely did, in "the most devastating flooding disaster in U.S. history, the 1993 Mississippi River flood."

Man, in his pomposity, never seems to learn.

One of THE best Mexican resturants in the world was in the basement of the holiday inn in Abu Dhabi. The big german designed airfield in Dubai was cool but we were stashed at the consulate for a while in Abu Dhabi. Some really great construction projects over there...........big money.

The Mexican resturant in that holiday inn was run by Thai's also.......:o)

In Doha (Al Dawa) in Qatar there was a place that was in an alley right off the gold souk that made kabobs.....It was a drive up thang in an alley so small we had to plull the mirrors in on our landcruiser (tough job buit we had to do it). For about 1.50$ ya got two colas, 6 of these really great lamb/goat kabobs a couble of lemons cut up and six big old kale leaves steamed . Grab a leaf of kale, slap a kabob in it, pull out the stick, squeeze lemon juice on it wrap it up in the kale and chow down......Then there was always PLO night at the local pizza hut. That was a hoot also...........

Nothing has changed about feeble attempts in controlling the Mississippi River. One of the largest projects in the United States is to, in the near term, prevent the Mississippi River changing course, and go roaring down it's old river channel in the Red River\Atchafalaya River Basin just north of Simmesport, Louisiana. Many knowledgeable engineers say man's puny endeavors are no more than a stop gap and doomed to failure.
