Pro-Israel Rally Brings Middle East Divide to Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. - Hundreds of pro-Israel demonstrators calling for an end to global terrorism rallied in a city park here yesterday, as counter demonstrators nearby decried Israeli military tactics in the West Bank and Gaza.

The focal point of the rally was a mangled bus brought from Jerusalem to dramatize the impact of terrorism on civilians. The bus was nearly destroyed in a suicide bomb attack last year that left 11 people dead and 50 wounded. Signs urged passersby to compare the bus to a San Francisco cable car in which they could have been riding.

She said if the Palestinians were better armed, they would not resort to terrorism.

They would just carpet-bomb whole cities. Freakin idiot.

How incredibly stupid. I read an article on FR yesterday about how ideology can lead to the adoption of very stupid positions. This would seem to be a good example of that thesis.

The only way that pro-Israel groups could rally is if they assemble in large numbers. It is largely self-defense as the Israel-haters have attacked them physically when they have come out in smaller groups.

There is a precedent for the Israel-haters to attack in at least two incidents this past year. One of which was at SF University. A mob threatened a small group on campus grounds while the police watched.

I guess if criminals were better armed, they would not resort to crime.

LOL. That would be consistent with her logic.

"Signs urged passersby to compare the bus to a San Francisco cable car in which they could have been riding."

Well it's true they won't resort to terrorism in Israel if they had more weapons....there wouldn't BE an Israel anymore.

An Israeli bus, destroyed in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem on Jan. 29, 2004, killing 11 passengers, is transported away from a garage in Jerusalem, Feb. 17, 2004. The traveling exhibit of the bombed-out remains of this Jerusalem bus is sparking controversy in Berkeley, Calif., where a counter-protest is planned to demonstrate opposition to Israeli policy. Organizers of the exhibit, which will be the focus of an anti-terrorism rally on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, say the point is to show the devastating effects of terrorism. (AP Photo/Baz Ratner, File)
