CBS is a joke. The report from the "investigation" was laughable. Everyone--and I mean everyone--that I know has rolled their eyes to this obvious whitewash. There is nothing CBS News can do to recover from this.

Even my most liberal friends have dropped any kind of defense of CBS. I can't imagine it will survive as a news bureau.

Yet when asked what CBS could do toward reaching some sort of detente, Graham said, "I think it would be a step forward to admit that what CBS did was intended to sway an election."

It is a great step past the truth to deny that CBS attempted to sway an election. The better description is that CBS attempted an American Coupe.

No, no, and no.

Thankfully, it's becoming increasingly evident that this bought-and-paid-for whitewash isn't working.

Bad luck for CBS that Danny Boy screwed up and got caught. The other major outlets are all just as bad. But CBS got caught, and so far they are doing a very poor job of wriggling out of it.

Forging Colonel Killian's signature on those fake memos is a federal felony. Where is the investigation? Where is the outrage?

Broadcasting those forged documents over telephone fax and TV airwaves is federal wire fraud. Where is the investigation? Where is the outrage?

Forging military orders such as: "Lt. Bush, report for a physical examination" is a federal felony. Where is the investigation? Where is the outrage?

Slander? Libel? Criminal conspiracy? Where is the investigation? Where is the outrage?

One of the most important questions not asked is: "Has this ever happened before?"

It is generally accepted that the blogosphere captured the lie. Without the alert attention of Freepers, this one would have gotten by also.

Can the news division change a culture that contributed to the sad comedy of errors without risking the journalism that made it great?

When was it great ? Seems to me they have pretty much been the same operation for forty years. I think that they have lost a lot of their luster because the general public has become more knowledgeable. Not to mention that seeBS has stubbed their toe occasionally.

Rather's Ted Baxter defense is a joke...."I only read what's put in front of me...I don't understand it."

Deborah Potter

I like some of her Newslab articles. For one thing, she rips hiring politicos as journalists, such as Stepho

As usual, the Associated Press got it wrong, again. The report answered all of the important questions. Let us look at two of them: Q. 1.) Is Ol' Dan biased? Answer: The report presented an immense amount of evidence that Ol' Dan is VERY biased. The report also concluded that there was no evidence of bias. Hence, Ol' Dan is "Rather" biased. His name fits his network so well: Dan "Rather" Biased.

Q. 2.) What does CBS stand for? Answer: Clearly Biased Stories.

Good piece.

Said Mason: "I think we're going to have to agree to disagree."

Just watch CBS news ratings soar down to the basement with this attitude.

CBS has donned a siege mentality over this and it shows through to the audience like a strobe-light hidden under a diaphanous negligee.

There's inherent criminality in the overall story...RICCO?

To wit: A conspiracy of at least 5 years' duration, CBS operatives in direct, repeated and pointed communication on this particular production, an agreement from CBS to bribe the donor of the false documents with a book deal and e-mail exchanges between CBS and the now discredited Burkett, et al., which focus specifically on the damage this would do to Bush's presidential campaign.

Those among CNS watchers who haven't just fallen off the turnip truck know that Thornberg has had an ongoing Attorney-Client relation with CBS and is bound to not present his client in a manner which may result in legal action against his client. Thus, the conclusions of "no political motive" (malice) and the "Is this a forgery?" (a specific crime, especially when used to derail a presidential election) are conspicuously defensive in their guardedness.

The report did, however, provide sufficient data for the common reader to learn that, although it's conclusions are a white-wash, it is abundant with ammunition for CBS' critics.

My point is not to destroy CBS, but to destroy the practice of presenting media bias as objective truth. Rathergate is a unique opportunity for those who would like end the liberal ownership of the "mainstream."
