An online poll on The Signal newspaper site, the-signal.com, wants your opinion on the presence of day laborers alongside San Fernando Road.
A little background
Yes, about a couple dozen day laborers are standing alongside the curb of San Fernando road here in a suburb of Los Angeles.
I must say that in the last six months, I have noticed an uptick. This may be do to a crack down in other neighborhoods and it is pooling them into this area. Then again, it may be additional supply of labor, legal or illegal.
What do you think? Vote at http://www.the-signal.com
You will find the poll alongside the left column under the header Reader Meter.

It's obvious this poll is being manipulated by Pro-Illegals. At this time 40% say do nothing, 21% I think say build a "Hiring Hall'. And these results in Ca - A place being overwhelmed with Illegals!

day laborer, the new word for BUM!I have worked with some of these guys, and they are definitely not bums. They work very hard for their money, and unlike the "full-time employees" show up clean, sober, and on time.

As of your post 47% of the voters think that the city should enforce anti-solicitation rule or crack down on lawbreaking employers as opposed to 40% who say they're not bothering anyone.
I would say more people support the rule of law than those who don't. But not by much. And not good for a nation founded on the rule of law.
Also the questions are very leading. The day laborers do bother people, they have threatened women and children or make them feel threatened. In my county, they obstruct vehicles attempting to get in legitimate businesses, the vehicles that come into the parking lot to pick them up block legitimate customers attempting to park and they don't purchase things from the businesses there, even though they are using a private parking lot to conduct their likely unlawful transactions with the laborers.
Another hint at the bias, they tag the question about anti-solicitation ordinances with a comment that it would ensure a lawsuit. Most people who care about how tax money is spent would rather the government not be sued for enforcing constitutional laws, so some might not select this one because the question is actually two parts, one good and one bad.

I saw it as an attempt to split the law & order responses into two groups while knowing the majority of responses wouldn't be for building a hiring hall. At first glance it appears that the vote is overwhelmingly for "Leave them Alone" (40%) but combine that with "Build Hiring Hall" (13%) you get 53%. Combining "Enforce the Law" with "Crack Down on Employers" yeilds 47%. The marginal difference is probably more in line with the readers of this rag.
Hold the phone - just checked again and the difference is now an even 50-50. Still not a good statement for the citizens of Santa Clarita's respect for the law. Just send your parking lot pirates over to their neighborhoods!
