Broad Street School was evacuated Thursday morning for the third time in just eight days when a kindergarten teacher discovered a fuseless stick of dynamite in her classroom, city police said.

Police determined the Salem County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit accidentally left the dynamite in the school last Friday following a training exercise, according to Lt. Burl Kimble.

Typically, K-9 handlers will hide fuseless sticks of dynamite or other devices inside already-cleared buildings as a reinforcement training aid for bomb-sniffing dogs, according to officials.

"Whenever they search a building like that, they have to put something out there for the dog to find," explained Cumberland County Sheriff Michael Barruzza.

Police do not believe the stick of dynamite posed a threat to students or staff at the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school.

"There was no fuse and no detonation device,"

The fuseless stick of dynamite was discovered in an empty storage container inside room B-1 of the school around 8:30 a.m. by kindergarten teacher Joan Soone, according to Ptl. Harold Watkins' investigation report.

The Salem County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit forgot to retrieve the device from inside Soone's classroom last Friday following a multi-agency sweep for a bomb then reported to have been inside the school, police said.

Salem County Sheriff John B. Cooksey did not wish to comment on the city police department's investigation into the left-behind stick of dynamite when contacted at his home Thursday.

"You're going to have to give me time to investigate the incident," Cooksey said, noting he did not work Thursday and first wished to speak with the department's K-9 handler.

Broad Street School was evacuated twice last week -- around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and 9:20 a.m Friday -- when bomb threats were called into the Cumberland County 9-1-1 Communications and Training Center, according to police investigation reports.

Oops!

Could have been some party had they been training with drug sniffing dogs.

"...a kindergarten teacher discovered a fuseless stick of dynamite in her classroom...."

Boy, tough school.

Used to be a teacher would just have to look out for a tack placed on their chair.

No, a REAL apple, one you could eat. But you may not be old enough to know or remember?

Barney Feif was a genius compared to these lawdogs. Hey, I bet they're hiring up at the state prison.

Of course, if one of us peons happened to posess such a stick of dynamite, "with no fuse & no detonation device" we could expect a long stay in the greybar hotel.

One set of laws for the masters and a different set for the serfs...

I wonder just what this particular sheriff is going to say the next time he arrests someone for possesion of explosives. I bet a defense attorney could cut him to ribbons.

Real bomb dog handlers use the paper that has the nitrate in it. Its hard to believe what some of these home made departments get away with.
