President and Mrs. Bush did not make any public appearances today as the prepare for this week's 2nd Inaugural. The President proclaimed Sunday as National Sanctity of Human Life Day and Religious Freedom Day.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: When President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935, the average life expectancy was about 60 years, which meant that most Americans would not live to become eligible for benefits, then set at age 65.
Today, most Americans enjoy longer lives and longer retirements. And that presents a looming challenge. Because Social Security was created as a pay-as-you-go system, current retirees are supported by the taxes paid by current workers. Unfortunately, the ratio of workers to retirees is falling steadily. In the 1950s, there were about 16 workers paying in for each person drawing out. Today, it's about three workers for every beneficiary. And by the time today's workers in their mid 20s begin to retire, there will be just over two.

What does POTY stand for? Sorry for ignorance
The VP loves his interaction with the Congress and is essentially the President's point man on Capitol Hill. He is also one of Dubya's most trusted and heeded advisors. And, of course, we all know the vital role he filled on 9/11/01 when he stayed in the WH and headed the command center.
Dick Cheney is, by far, the greatest Vice President in American history who will never be president. I, for one, regret that his health history prevented him from ever running for president, because he'd have been a great one. But I also frequently marvel that he even became VP, because the odds for him were very, very long indeed.
We got about 6" of snow last week, but of course none of it has melted yet! Every bit helps. I think it is supposed to warm up later next week. We usually do have this bitterly cold weather every year for a week or so. Sometimes have windchills in the -30-40 degree range. Luckily, I can stay inside most of the time, but seems the older I get the more I dread going out even for a few minutes. We did get a few days of good rain last fall that helped a lot.
**I have noticed that quite often the both the President and the VP wear boots even with their business suits. I also have a friend who says that he cannot often find shoes that are as comfortable as the cowboy type boots and he very often wears them even with a suit. I wonder if comfort is the reason with GWB and the VP.**
I hadn't noticed that the VP ever wears boots with suits before, but maybe he does. Doesn't he have like a EEE width foot or something? In that case, shoe fit could be a real problem, I would think!

As for the jeans, yep, I love seeing the Pres. in jeans OR a suit and tie. And this week we get to see him in a tux and Laura in ballgowns! I read somewhere she might wear cowboy boots with her dress to one of the balls. I hope we get pcitures!
Here's a funny regarding abbreviations . . . when I was "new" here, someone posted a response with the abbreviation "IIRC" and since we were talking about military thing, I thought it was some military term and tried and tried to figure out what it could be . . . finally I got brave and just asked, and it stands for "If I Remember Correctly" . . . :-)

I sometimes wonder if we as a people will ever realize just how fortunate we were that Dick Cheney became George Bush's Vice-President. I believe that there is such a thing as destiny, for individuals and for entire groups of people, and that both of these men were given to us for these times. But maybe I'm just being too simplistic, I'm sure some people would think so.

"The Raising of a President" by (don't have the first name) Wead, I think is the last name of the author . . . about early childhood of presidents. The guy on FOX who talked about it said Laura Bush was in it but since she didn't raise a President (at least not yet!) I don't get it, but looks interesting.
"Taking Heat: The President, The Press, and My Years in the White House" by Ari Fleisher. I loved Ari and I think he had a great relationship with the Pres., so it should be a good book. Unfortunately, won't be out till March 1st, but be sure to put it on hold at your library!
I don't think you're too simplistic at all. Remember, God has a plan for all of us, and He knows what is going to happen . . . I think he puts people in a place, at a time, very frequently-more than we think. I also think sometimes little things we say/do affect others much more than we realize, and God might put us in a person's path to do a kind deed, or give an encouraging word, at the time that person needs it. Make sense? I know it's happened to me when i need it.
Oh. I love him more now. What a man!

I don't think you are being too simplistic I agree with you it was destiny both for America and the world that Dick Cheney was VP and in Washington on 9/11.
Probably wants to keep in it safe for when Jeb goes.

One of FDR's sons once said his father never intended it to be a retirement, only a nest egg. The dems never look to the future. Their stance will come back to haunt them. The President has said he will not leave problems for future presidents (as clinton did).
