Freezing Rain Coats Area Roads Air Masses Battling Over Valley
PORTLAND -- Its the battle of the air masses over the Willamette Valley Saturday.
At 9 a.m., light rain was falling, freezing as it hit roads, power lines and plants. Snow was starting to come down east of the Cascades.
KOIN News 6 meteorologist Mark Ronchetti said cold east winds are mixing with a wet warm front. The warm system slowly chipping away at the cold front will eventually win, and the freezing rain will turn to rain.
The temperature is expected to sit just below the freezing mark until about 4 or 5 p.m.

No kidding! My son goes to school in 1 county, lives in another, and in order to get to and fro, goes thru still another...forget all the names...Multanomeh, etc...
What I want to know is.... When does the football game start? All the local Portland stations are covering the "storm" wall-to-wall and I'm afraid they're so clueless they'll pre-empt the game!
Oh-oh! The lights just blinked twice!
Yawn! Let me know when the big H freezes over--that will be news! To hear the Dems, whine, one would think it already has.
vaudine
The East part of Multnomah County is going to be hit very soon with lower temperatures and perhaps snow or freezing rain blasting out of the Gorge. Snow may be falling in Troutdale right now. I have some friends living out on the Sandy River and they may soon be wishing they had rented a warm hotel room in SW Portland.
In The Dalles I just stepped outside to replace the hummingbird feeder (dang thing keeps freezing up!) and the dry snowflakes are coming down on the blackberry leaves like dry sand or something. Makes kind of a sifting noise. The temp has gone down 2 degrees in the past hour. Now 20 degrees. About one inch on the ground so far.
I'll bet he goes to school in Tigard!
Here in Skamania, we're getting frozen drizzle (very small hail pellets), which are being blown around by the winds. It's 26 degrees here.
I about 30 miles NE of you (Mt. Adams). 19 degrees now (brrr). Freezing drizzle as well. Was snowing this morning - sideways.
That's not snow - it's freezing rain.
We have about a quarter inch layer of ice covering most everything here in Oregon City. It was dry as a bone and 30 degrees when I took the dog for a walk last night at 10. Right now it is 28 degrees with light rain falling through the air that is freezing as it hits the ground. The street outside is just wet, just a few vehicles venturing out. The highway cams are showing very light traffic and cars spinning out on 205 just north of here. I-5 north of Wilsonville is closed to trucks. Basically just good day to stay home. Unsure if conditions will improve in the next 24 hours. The cold air pouring in from the Gorge appears to be winning the battle as the warmer moist air from the west tries to work its way into the valley. I have a feeling this sleet/freezing rain is going to be with us through the weekend.
I'm in the Columbia Gorge. I have ice pellets outside, piling up like snow. It's like walking in sand. 21 degrees with occasional wind gusts.
Yes, and it is pronounced >> tie - gard << by the natives here in Oregon.
Or >> tie - gurd << by some of the California transplants, I find myself saying it that way at times.
Some back-east big-wig national news correspondent once referred to the city as >> tigg - urd, orie - gone << recently.
I was rolling on the floor bustin' a gut.
Last year (or was it the year before) when there were wildfires in The Dalles it made national FoxNews. The Fox gal pronounces The Dalles as The Dollies. Oopps.
My, my I had no idea there were a handful of Gorge freepers. I think there are now 4 (including myself) who have posted on this thread from the Gorge. Surprise.
It's Bush's Fault!
I think there's a couple more floating around out there, too.
Portland aint He77 but its darn close ;-)
How is Hillsboro? My daughter & family live there.
