N.Y. asks online cigarette buyers to cough up tax
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday that smokers who bought cigarettes over the Internet had better be prepared to cough up taxes they tried to avoid by going online.
"The law says you got to pay your taxes. The handful of people who don't are just stealing from the rest of us," Bloomberg said in a weekly radio address.
The city's finance department this week sent letters to 3,700 smokers asking them to fork over $1.3 million in city taxes from Internet tobacco purchases.
The annual loss to the city from online tobacco sales totals $40 million, according to Joanna Perlman, a finance department spokeswoman. Some individuals owed as much as $10,000.
"If you have a bill for $10,000 for cigarette taxes, you're a dealer, you're not just smoking," Bloomberg said.
"The finance commissioner is required by the city charter to enforce the law. It's against the law to buy something out of state and bring it in and avoid sales tax," he said.
That's ok. As long as you found a better way for yourself! :)
Well, hell. If you're not using the machine anymore, see if you can sell it to someone. I've sold a Supermatic II and an Excel to 2 fellow employees in the past 20 days.
The more smokers we can get to discover alternative routes to avoid these extortionary cigarette prices, the better.
Sorry, that last post was meant for RikaStrom.
Federal law provides that sales from Indian reservations are exempt only when the sales are to members of the tribe. Sales to non-members are still taxable.
Not using it anymore? Who said that! heh!
I go through about three a year, Randall. I use one and have one set aside for when I wear this one out. Then, when I open up the new one, then I order another back-up.
I can't live without my machine! :)
I thought so. hehe!
Sorry. Government has no authority to tell me what I can possess or ingest.
This whole 'legal' and 'illegal' bit is a sham.
Haven't you ever wondered why politician/ lawyers and illegal aliens get to operate under a different set of laws than us poor, ignorant, taxpaying Americans?
Take a look at the definitions from an online legal dictionary;
legal
adj., adv. according to law, not in violation of law or anything related to the law.
That seems to be pretty straightforward- now look at the legal definition of the opposed word, illegal-
illegal
1) adj. in violation of statute, regulation or ordinance, which may be criminal or merely not in conformity. Thus, an armed robbery is illegal, and so is an access road which is narrower than the county allows, but the violation is not criminal.
Well of course armed robbery is illegal; its a violation of the 8th Commandment. But if a narrow access road is illegal, how can it NOT be criminal?
Because any statute, regulation, ordinance or act that does anything OTHER than describe punishment for violations of Commandments 6 through 10 are not laws that affect the people! They are merely governmental policies, and only governmental entities must conform to them!
(Thats how the government gets around the Congress shall make no law part of the Constitution.)
Politician/lawyers KNOW this, so anytime they run afoul of the 'law', it's just a slap on the wrist because their peers know it as well.
Illegal aliens get away with it because of ignorance, and the fact they ARE undocumented...they have no 'legal entity' for the government to control.
Now, I realize how odd this must sound to some folks, but stop for a second to think about this-
The state statues define states, cities and towns as 'political subdivisions', which means they are artificial creations.
How exactly can we, as human beings, be born IN a state, when the only thing a state can create is another artificial entity?
The question is: what if you only browse a cig website, then order via the toll free number?
Note: From now on just avoid going online and go straight to the Mafia for your cigarette supply. They dont keep records.
"The law says you got to pay your taxes. The handful of people who don't are just stealing from the rest of us,"
Bwahahahahaha
The only way to enforce that law is to put custom houses up at all City entry points and check every person and vehicle trying to enter.
Some friends that roll their own buy a kilo of tobacco every six weeks, so I'm starting with 100 plants to allow for die off, disease, etc.
The climate in Denver should be fine if you allow for extra watering during the dry season and cover them when you get a cold spell.
(I lived in Colorado for several years, so I know sometimes you get those freaky cold-weather fronts!)
Thanks for this, MamaTexan. You make a lot of value points, to be sure!
If it was "just a handful" they wouldn't be bitching. It's their own fault they are losing all that money. They should have left the taxes alone.
The lawmakers are gluttons when it comes to cigartte taxes.
Sorry. Government has no authority to tell me what I can possess or ingest.
This whole 'legal' and 'illegal' bit is a sham.
Try telling that to the DEA, BATF, FBI, or a whole host of other alphabet agencies...
To paraphrase Ash, from "Army of Darkness," "Legal, Illegal, they're the ones with the guns!"

(sigh)
A sad but true statement.
However, my family arrived in 1623, just a bit shy of 400 years ago.
I CANNOT and WILLNOT kowtow to an artificial creation, because I know for a fact they did not endure what they did so my own government can control me.
Call me stubborn, call me foolish, but to allow the government that kind of power SPITS on the memory of their sacrifice...and that I will NOT do!
Imagine the budget increases those agencies would need to crack down on smokers. They must be drooling. Hey, the more the merrier.
Thanks. I might just start this this spring.
Any ideas as to where I might find some seed?
Gabz was looking into growing tobacco as well. You can ping her to see what she has found out.
