Ex-Drug Agent Found Convicted of Perjury [Tulia, TX]
AP ^ | Jan 14 2005

The lone undercover agent in a sting that sent dozens of black people to prison on bogus drug charges was convicted Friday of one of two perjury counts.

Tom Coleman was acquitted of testifying falsely in a 2003 hearing that as a sheriff's deputy he never stole gas from county pumps, but he was found guilty of saying that he didn't learn about the theft charge against him until August 1998.

Jurors were to begin hearing evidence in the penalty phase of the trial later Friday. The perjury charge carries a maximum 10-year sentence and $10,000 fine.

Coleman arrested 46 people, most of them black, in the small, mostly white farming community of Tulia. He worked alone and used no audio or video surveillance, and no drugs were ever found, but 38 defendants were convicted or reached plea deals

Yeah, let's lock him up for 10 years because he guessed wrong and was off by 2 months.

No, let's lock him up for 10 years because he manufactured false drug cases and imprisoned innocent people.

The "perjury" charge was not connected with the drug case.

In as much as it makes him a proven lying scumbag thug, yes it has everything to do with the drug CASE(S), as in plural. Blackbird.

If you are that familiar with the case and believe all 38 convicted scumbag drug dealers were pure and innocent as the driven snow, I've got a bridge to sell you.

"No, let's lock him up for 10 years because he manufactured false drug cases and imprisoned innocent people."

Hey, by all means. Take him to court on each of the 38 cases and try him for manufacturing false drug cases and imprisoning innocent people.

Geez, they didn't do that, now did they? I wonder why not, Lazamataz? No case?

Uh huh. Because he thought he learned about the charge in August, 1998, not June, 1998.

Oh yeah. What a horrible man.

So you are stating that this case is completely over?

I think the lying cop was more of a scumbag than the dealers, wasn't he? The dealeers (provided that they existed in the first place) were simply providing a product that someone else was willing to buy. It's called CAPITALISM: if you provide something I want, I'll give you something you want. The transaction benefits both of parties, & it's completely voluntary.

Yet you give this lying pig all of the glory. I wish that he would rot in jail, but since he won't, maybe his reputation will be ruined for life, that piece of chicken s**t.

"So you are stating that this case is completely over?"

Where did you get that from my statement? Making things up?

Well, $6 million divided 46 ways ... I hope it's over. (Then again, $6 million buys a lot of drugs.)

Furthermore, I hope that neighborhood of Tulia reverts back to the drug infested rat-hole sewer that it was, and law enforcement ignores all pleas for assistance in cleaning it up.

Of course, if I'm wrong and there never were any drugs in that neighborhood, then everyone will simply go back to living their lives in peace and quiet. Won't they, Lazamataz?

10 years seems a little harsh. How about the "30 Days with Bubba" treatment?

Unnecessarily contentious; furthermore, you seem to be hoping for bad outcomes for a given neighborhood.

I remember why I didn't bother posting to you all these years -- thanks for the reminder.

No. I think they are equally culpable.

The dealeers (provided that they existed in the first place) were simply providing a product that someone else was willing to buy. It's called CAPITALISM: if you provide something I want, I'll give you something you want. The transaction benefits both of parties, & it's completely voluntary.

I cannot disagree in any stronger terms. Dealing drugs is not capitalism, it is feeding off of the addiction of another. It is vulturism. It is absolutely morally bereft. Drug dealers display their immorality in myriad other ways, but the main way is by dealing these poisons to the addicted.

W/ all due respect, making such a blanket statement regarding drug use & addiction is nonsense. They are 2 totally different subjects. Those of us who enjoy smoking marijuana are NOT addicts. Besides, marijuana isn't a physically-addictive drug in the 1st place, regardless of what the Drug Warriors tell you. Responsible use far outweighs drug addiction by a long shot.

At the moment, it is...but the Drug War's house of cards is slowly tumbling down under its own weight. There's nothing you can do to turn the tide! :-)=

I cannot disagree, so long as you limit your comments to marijuana. I personally cannot use it, because my cocaine addiction has made any drug use impossible, including alcohol.

I, on the other hand, hear that story every single day in the rooms of Narcotics Anonymous.

If he is brutally and slowly murdered by other inmates, he will have gotten off too easily.
