BAGHDAD - US troops shot dead seven Iraqis who were found setting up a mortar post near a mosque in north Baghdad, an interior ministry official and the US military said on Friday.
The seven men were intercepted by an American patrol as they set up the mortar near the Abu Hanifa Sunni mosque in Al-Adhamiya district in the north of Baghdad, said the official, asking not to be named.
The Americans opened fire, killing all seven, he added.
US Brigadier General Jeffrey Hammond, the deputy commander for the US army in Baghdad, confirmed that snipers had hidden in the area where they expected insurgents to fire from and had lain in wait for them.
Hammond said the First Cavalry Division regularly sends out snipers to areas where they suspect insurgents might fire off mortar rounds.
He distributed pictures of two of the insurgents bodies whose faces were hooded.
Excellent
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Twenty-eight Iraqis held by Iraqi authorities for common crimes escaped as they were being transported by bus from the Abu Ghraib prison to another facility, a U.S. official said Friday.
Lt. Col. Barry Johnson said 38 prisoners initially got away Thursday evening but 10 were quickly recaptured. He gave no further details but said none of the prisoners were believed to be insurgents and no U.S. forces were guarding them during the transfer.
Efforts to contact Iraqi officials were unsuccessful because government offices are closed on Fridays.
I must say, our troops are just the best. How lucky we are to have them protecting us and freedom.
"snipers had hidden in the area where they expected insurgents to fire from" - classic counter-insurgency tactics and very hard to beat.
Yes. Apparently any and all mosques qualify as such areas.
.
Be careful. If the ACLU gets hold of this they will sue our military for profiling!
Thank God they are profiling. It will take some time, but we will disabuse them of the idea that mosques make good weapons dumps. Taking out heavy weapons operators has a double benefit. It takes out the immediate threat, and it makes the bad guys waste ammo to train new teams, that is if they give a rat about hitting us with the d@mn things. If they train in country we can track that too.
Best part about this story: No prisoners!
You've got it Ben Chad.
Best part about thist story: anti-Iraqi terrorists will read it and be afraid.
So criminals get a freebie?
yeah this was our 3rd bat. I have pics of those suckers layed out.It is great! It was a 3 man sniper team they seen from a distance and ran 500m to engage them. I think one of the Soldiers was injured but not bad. It sure did boast some morale when we heard this.
Before I could tell the difference, (in Nam) the 105's next to us started a battery fire and although I don't remember getting there, I found myself face down in a half full drainage ditch looking for a mushroom cloud.
Scared the living $hit outta me.
This story just warms my heart! God Bless our military....HEROS!
Thanks for all that you do. Stay safe.
Good Shooting !!
I'd like to see those pics
My step-son just had his NG MOS changed from Mobile Artillery to Sniper. My the Lord and his M-40 keep him safe.
