Syrian activist gets rights prize

"(Naise) embodies the soul of the democratic movement in Syria", a struggle he had been involved with for 30 years, the group said in a statement on the award, which is named after the first secretary of the London-based group Amnesty International... The Syrian activist was due to go on trial on January 16 accused of "opposing the objectives of the revolution" and "disseminating false information aiming at weakening the state," the group said, adding that he faced 15 years in prison... He was last arrested in April 2004 after publishing a report on human rights in Syria and leading calls for an end to 40 years of emergency rule that has all, but stifled political life in the Arab country. He was freed in October to await trial.
