Minnesota's reputation for bitter winters earns bragging rights today when temperatures start to fall into a subzero cellar for a long, frigid weekend.
The National Weather Service predicts a daytime high temperature in the Twin Cities of 9 degrees, though blustery winds will create wind chills in the region of 16 to 20 below zero.
Then it will get colder.
A metro temperature of 14 below is predicted for tonight, and readings should remain below zero until Monday. The predicted highs are 4 below on Friday, 7 below on Saturday and 6 below on Sunday.
The last time the Twin Cities experienced three consecutive days of below-zero highs was the notorious winter of 1996, when the state record of 60 below was recorded in the Iron Range community of Tower.
Officials who routinely deal with cold-weather issues worry that Minnesotans in 2005 may have gotten a bit out of touch with the impact of these types of arctic blasts after so many years of comparatively balmy winters.
"Even I don't have a set of jumper cables in the trunk of my car yet," said Kevin Smith, a spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. "Normally I would, but because we've had so little snow and no low temperatures, real winter hasn't been on anybody's mind."
It is now.

Bush's fault.
Minnesota in January is a good place and time for a "Global Warming Conference".
They are really hyping this. Four below, 7 below and 6 below are nothing here in Minnesota. Brother.
Proof that global warming is a threat to mankind.
More evidence of Global Warming!
The coldest day in my life was back in 92 or 93 at Taconite Harbor, Minnesota. I helped put fuel aboard an ore carrier for its last trip to the lower lakes on January 5th, I believe. It was 25 below zero with a brisk 35 mile an hour breeze coming off the lake. My job was to stand on the "dead pedal" and release it if I heard from the pumper foreman aboard the boat via 2-way radio. We put 70,000 gallons aboard in about 90 minutes and I had consumed a lot of coffee that morning...
(ya I know something eles that makes a cool tinkling sound on the sidewalk)
Brrrr! Now THAT'S cold!
Been there, done that.
I live in southern Arizona now. The high today will be mid 60's. The Harley is parked outside, ready to go.
I had three or four layers of protection but still thought I was going to die.
Wow, nothing got frostbitten, I hope! ^^
LOL! It sounds like what they say about Yellowstone, which is partially in your state. Something along the lines of, "In Yellowstone, there are three season - July, August, and winter."

Huh? Is this english? I can't figure out what it means.
I din't think i could find the "faucet" at -25.
Should be: Coldest temps are just ahead. 3 days of below-zero highs not seen since '96.
I was in Minnesota for this. The instrument for measuring the wind chill said -120F before it broke. I remember having to start my car every 2 hours overnight. Everytime I went out to start the engine it was so cold that one revolution took 2 seconds. We heated some water in a frying pan, went outside quick and threw it up in the air. The water would freeze before it hit the ground. You could hear the ice bounce off the ground.
I've often wondered how you start your car at the end of a work day?
