Tsunami tragedy to boost religious unity, reduce terrorism: Clinton

The tsunami tragedy in Asia would strengthen religious unity and reduce terrorism, former US President Bill Clinton (news - web sites) said.

"I am grateful for the opportunity that this terrible tragedy gives for religious reconciliation in the world," he said in an interview with the US-funded Alhurra broadcasting network in the Middle East .

Clinton and his predecessor, George Bush (news - web sites), have been been asked by President George W. Bush (news - web sites) to lead private fund raising efforts for the victims of the December 26 killer waves, which left more than 157,000 people dead.

Clinton noted that people around the world were "reaching out for the Muslims of Indonesia, for the Hindus and the Buddhists, and the Muslims and the Christians in Sri Lanka to reconcile."

He also said he was grateful for the aid that had been pledged by Arab governments and added that "a rather surprising number of Arabs" had contacted him and Bush in the last few days to contribute donations privately.

"I think anything that the Arab governments and the Arab people can do to support that sort of human interaction and contact will help to stabilize the situation in the Middle East, reduce the likelihood of terror, create a climate in which the peace process can resume, now that the Palestinian elections have occurred," he said.

Former President Bush (news - web sites) said in the same interview that the response to the tsunami victims was "overwhelming.

"We are not talking just about the two million (dollars) from the corporations. Some of the heartwarming stories are from the little guys that give five bucks, or two ten dollars, or two dollars.

"And people are pouring out their hearts to this effort, so we're very happy with where it stands today," he said.

Too bad the traitor didn't notice that Indonesia was so full of love and reconciliation they told us to get out of their country.

And when Pollyanna Clinton's ridiculous prediction doesn't come true, it's a sure bet that the Left will blame Bush for it.

Clinton's an idiot...but he's a crafty idiot.

If this is an "opportunity" for good, couldn't we use nuclear weapons off-shore from many countries to create more opportunity for good elsewhere...

This drivel reminds me of the "economic benefit" that is caused every a hurricane destroys a part of our country. Destroying stuff and then peying money to get back where you were doesn't make us richer...

People dying so that we can feel good about ourselves (like Clinton seems to) doesn't make the world a better place.

"I am grateful". It ain't about you, Bill. 160,000 didn't die so William Jefferson Clinton could be gratified.

What a horse's petard.
