Anecdotal experience, seeking others with similar to learn to create a more systematic and organized approach to finding names and money and where that money went, particularly with this exceptional election cycle with the new 527. Largest of my hopes is to create a "library" or resource for research.
The story: last night I blundered on some liberal folks I know on public integrity.org. after turning them up on newsmeat.dom... Turns out this couple donated a total of $40K to a Soros org called "Media Fund" in October of 2004. The wifey decided to join "Mothers Opposing Bush"--a way to work out maternal longings of the fashionable sterile, maybe, but this woman is virulently anti-child... I was led to this point by simply typing in a name I knew and the other keyword, investor.
This individual is a software executive in Austin, Texas, but I wonder if that "investor" keyword is a significant help in accessing unexpected things. I thought only the high-rolling million-dollar donations got to the attention, and I always found the generous donations that didn't quite reach that stratisphere to be just as interesting.
Anyway, hoping not to bore, I'm seeking FRs of similar interest to develop a proactive stategy of outing donations to 527s. Our side has them, of cours, but from my own delvings into this area...we are newborn babes in the woods.
WHAT McCain has wrought, we are left to try to make sense of. Fortunately, it's looking like it just might be fun. Please let me know if you might be a miner for a heart of gold--or--tin.

Bump.
I think a thread compiling these kinds of resources would be useful.
Most states have sex offender registries (including addresses and pictures) online. Long shot, sure, but you never know. Also handy when buying a house.
YAHOO, found myself as a major donor to the Swiftvets, printing that page up to save.
Now I have a (valid) reason to detest the people living in Brooklyn Heights.

Hey, link would be appreciated. I tried to find myself there--guess I didn't look hard enough.
Then I found some money going to "Mothers Opposing Bush"--this was a scream, since these two people don't believe any baby ought to escape the delivery room alive, and call women who actually have children "breeders." Trying to cloak themselves in sweet motherhood...
Anyway, never have pulled in so much from a single search. But I'm never systematic about it--guidestar could be a great source, because foundations give to foundations. You can keep your donors secret (PP does) but you can't keep who you donate to from a foundation secret.
