Why aren't we concentrating all our efforts on those countries that are grateful?

But in Washington, White House spokesman Scott McClellan demanded "further clarification from Indonesia about what this means."

I'm with Scott. Indonesia should just cut to the chase here. Color me disgusted!

"What more can the world expect from Muslims?"

Well, Colon Powell said he thought the muslims would be grateful and learn to like us, etc.

Says more of course about Gullible Powell than it does about muslims.

Personally I hope we don't give one penny to the UN for Indonesia -- let Bill and Hillary give back their millions from their friends in Indonesia to help.

They don't want our help, then they can kiss goodbye to our money as well IMHO.

Ungrateful people!

I don't think we should be too knee jerk in reacting to this...the government of Indonesia is very likely to be all over the place politically. It is the people whose minds and hearts we will win if we patiently and quietly assert the good will that makes us what America is all about.

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head here. There is a pride thing, as well as domestic political pressure within Indonesia. We don't want Indonesia going pear-shaped. It was always kind of a damned if you do or if you don't situation. And what I'd like to know is if the agitators are all Islamists living a good distance from the devistation.

To all the people saying we should pull out:

We (the US) gives help in situations like this (i.e. big natural disasters) because it is the right thing to do, not for the gratitude of those we help. If you're only in it for the gratitude, then your really just doing the work for payment - if you don't get paid in gratitude you won't help. That is a very sad position to take. You have to do what is right because it is right - not for any other reason.

At some point America has to tell these yo yos to take care of their own.

The old saying "we always bite the hand that feeds us" is apropos here.

IMHO, the military shouldn't have been there in the first place. The military is for fighting our nation's wars and national defense. Let the Peace Corps and Hollywood take care of all the humantarian help.

I certainly understand what you're saying in principle, but the problem is that the Peace Corps and Hollywood doesn't have aircraft carriers and the airlift capabilities that goes along with them. Our military is really the only institution on the face of the earth that could execute the mission to quickly help out with a disaster of this magnitude. We should simply help out the people who really appreciate our help and tell the ungrateful ones to go pound sand.

Indonesian government is obviously living in fear of the rebels - appeasement appeasement - last one to be eaten by the alligator.

One more illustration of the enemy we face.

Better yet--we should ALL give EXACTLTY one penny to the relief effort in Indonesia. Everybody should write a 2nd check in the amount of $Zero dollars and 01/100 cents ($0.01) and send it to them. We have two choices of how to show our displeasure with the VP of Indonesia: 1) Do nothing or 2) send a one penny check. The check idea will really demonstrate how pissed off we are.

Fine with me, now back to the show where we kick Moslem butt instead of saving it.

I truly believe that the people of Indonesia will remember who helped them out. That is what the Indonesian Govt. is trying to prevent.

That would fit with this bite from the article..

Although most Indonesians have expressed thanks for U.S. help, nationalist politicians in the world's most populous Muslim country have been grumbling about "American interlopers."

I agree with you. We didn't go there to be thanked. We went there to help them recover from a natural disaster. The Israeli's get their butts kicked by the entire world, yet they continue to offer aid and assistance. It's a reflection of their heart, and ours, that we do it in the midst of prejudice and ingratitude.

These peoples are being helped by that "evil war machine", the U.S. military. It's bound to affect a few hearts. One soul at a time. The same reason the government wishes to kick us out is the same reason they do not desire an Israeli in the country to offer assistance, to do so would clash with the careful bigoted response they have cultivated their population to believe about the Jewish people. One side propaganda, one side pratical reality we aren't infidels.

Do they want any others who have to come help to get out (like the Brits and Aussies), or is it just us?

It's everybody - they want all western influence out including the UN. Our (Aussie) Foreign Affairs Minister Mr Downer said that he was not offended as he believed that the government needed to keep a fairly large minority of Fundamentalists happy by doing this. The political situation in Indonesia is often very tense and support for the major parties still must be garnered from the fundies or it's out of Government for whoever is in power. All that said I am truely offended at the way this was handled. A country with a bit of decency would have put it to those countries helping that they believe they would be ready to take over the relief and rebuilding projects in 3 months and then thank the countries for their help. I for one am now making sure my money goes to India through a mission.

It's too late however for those people in the region - they have already been subjected to the help, generousity and spirit of Aussies and Americans. This will have an impact on many Indonesians and, Please God, here's hoping that many of them come to believe in Jesus because of it.
