McFarlane on Reagan's Foreign Policy
Council on Foreign Relations ^ | June 7, 2004 | interview by Bernard Gwertzman

"On Reagan's watch we ended the Cold War, brought down Marxism, and reduced nuclear weapons for the first time in history. Yes, not everything was so enlightened. We did have a squalid scandal about Iran and Nicaragua, but I think history will judge him very, very positively for the transformation of the Cold War equation."

What was so squalid about Nicaragua and El Salvador? Any Marxists running things down there that I don't know about?

He refers to the Ollie North thing -- Iran-Contra.

Nicaragua's Marxist single-party state succumbed to the pressure, agreed to internationally supervised elections, and lost. It has been democratic ever since (at least in the context of Latin America). So, the policy was a success, however oddly it was carried out. And f--- anyone who was opposed to it, because that is the same thing as being opposed to democracy. They belong at the end of a rope (figuratively of course; in the same way that Daniel Ortega, Fidel Castro, and Hugo Chavez also belong there).
