The president is on the warpath all of a sudden. I just love the way he is just throwing it back in these libs' faces. He outlined the role of his faith yesterday; said he "doesn't see how you can be president without a relationship with the Lord." He told editors and reporters of the Washington Times yesterday in an interview in the Oval Office that "many in the public misunderstand the role of faith in his life and his view of the proper relationship between religion and government." He said, "I think people attack me because they are fearful that I will then say that you're not equally as patriotic if you're not a religious person. I've never said that. I've never acted like that. I think that's just the way it is. I don't see how you can be president without a relationship with the Lord." Now, he's right about one thing: The people that react the way they do to this in opposition are totally reacting through the prison of fear. They are fearful of it, scared to death of it, because it represents things to them in life that they wish didn't exist, and that fear causes them to start telling stories that aren't true. That fear causes them to start making assumptions that Bush is consulting the Bible, or praying, or having conversations with God before he implements policy. None of this is true, but these are the stories that fear make people start telling themselves.
Of course, it was okay when Hillary Clinton was channeling Eleanor Roosevelt. You know, that was fine. When Hillary in the White House said, (paraphrasing) "Yeah, I see her ghost in the Oval Office." Oh, that was wonderful to know that Eleanor Roosevelt is still prowling the grounds of the White House! When it becomes God -- and maybe that was the problem. Eleanor Roosevelt is a god or her husband is a god to some of these people, and they just don't like Bush's God. He also had a message for conservatives yesterday on immigration. He vowed to push forward on immigration, and he said, (paraphrasing) "If I had listened to all of my critics during the tax debate, I would have quit and we wouldn't have had the tax cuts," and he's got a point about that. He also made a big push on Social Security yesterday, and he told members of Congress, "You are risking your careers if you don't tackle this now."
I mentioned to you once last year when we talked about this in great detail, that this is going to be one of the toughest political fights the president has had -- but that he can win it. Now, there are some recalcitrant Republicans on this, and here's the difference. This Social Security issue illustrates, ladies and gentlemen, the difference between people who just take up space and just spend a little time in Washington, and those who lead. There is no question this program is outmoded particularly from its original design in 1935 or thereabouts, whenever it was created. It is not relevant any longer as it was then. It is a financial crisis waiting to happen. Here is an opportunity to restructure the program, and if you look at the polling data on this, 55% of people under 35 are in favor of these personal accounts. Something like 33% are opposed, and those are the people over 60. Those are the current retirees or those close to the current retirement age who probably have some fear themselves that they're going to be screwed out of some benefits. But he's going to get some Republicans with him on this. He probably will, before it's all over, get some Democrats on this because this fight is going to illustrate for the American people who's just taking up space, and who's just, you know, twiddling their thumbs and who's really interested in fixing this and modernizing this for our new society, our new culture. It's a different age now.
Michael Barone pointed this out in a recent column of his at U.S. News and World Report. He thinks Bush has a pretty good chance of getting this done because the American cultural shift that has taken place in recent years is going to largely make this possible -- whereas, for example, the Clintons' attempt to nationalize the health care industry back in 1993. The country was never for that. The country was never in tune with that, and they were going against the grain, which is what liberals always do. Liberals are always going against the grain of instincts, cultural instincts. They're going against the grain of right and wrong on so many things -- and they're getting kookier and kookier about that even now. But when it comes to Social Security, there is a widespread view among a majority of people now that something needs to be done. So he will have a much larger majority supporting him on this, and that will apply pressure to the members of Congress that ordinarily don't want to touch this. They're scared to death to touch it. They think it will result in their defeat in 2006, 2008, 2010, whenever their next election is, be they in the House or the Senate.
So the good sign about all of this is that the president is not even slowing down. He hasn't even been inaugurated yet, and in that first press conference he had after the election he laid out the agenda. The agenda was also laid out during the campaign, and he hit the New Year running and is gonna work hard on all these things, and, like he said, if he listened to his critics -- and this is great advice for all of us, folks -- if he'd listened to his critics and tried to please them and tried to please as many people as possible, he wouldn't have gotten anything done. We wouldn't have started the war on terror. We would not have retaliated for 9/11, and we certainly wouldn't have had tax cuts. So, you know, he's hit the deck running at full speed.

Get out your can of whoopass and use it! I want conservative judges, no income tax, the world rid of terroritst scum and all that support them. I want North Korea bombed the next time the leadership threatens us. I want the Iranina Mullahs given 48 hrs before nukage. I want Syria steamrolled and taken off the map if they have the WMDs or so much as sneeze in the wrong direction. I want the end of doubletalk..I want all "moderates" purged. I want.................

I think Rush went too far to assert that. Bush says repeatedly that he prays for wisdom, and that he reads the Bible. I also know from hearing ministers with whom Bush associates that he seeks their counsel and receives their input. Of course, he knows the buck stops with him, but Bush is not an island unto himself, so he seeks counsel, and one of the Beings whose Words have informed him is the Lord.
Bush is trying to help people understand that he is using his own mind and will as well as being shaped by the Word of God and prayer, etc. Some decades ago, before the moral and spiritual collapse of much of America, it would not have been necessary to keep stating this case.
Whatever happened to that mantra of the Democrats:
