Natural Resources Police won't suffer interference

By Gene Mueller
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Published January 12, 2005

The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) sent a warning to animal rights activists who intend to interfere with lawful hunting. On New Year's Day NRP officers arrested and charged a Mechanicsville man for interfering with hunters, among other criminal charges.

After receiving complaints of hunter harassment, NRP officers set up surveillance in the area of Morgan Brothers Road near Cremona in St. Mary's County. There, they witnessed Allan Eugene Pulliam, 37, confronting goose hunters near his property, the officers said. The goose hunters were hunting legally and were not on Pulliam's land. According to the officers, Pulliam drove back and forth on the property line in his vehicle and discharged numerous rounds from a 30-30-caliber rifle. When NRP officers made contact with Pulliam, marijuana was discovered in his pickup truck.

Pulliam was charged with interfering with hunters, carrying a loaded weapon in a vehicle, reckless endangerment, disturbing the public peace and possessing a controlled dangerous substance. Pulliam was transported to the District Court Commissioner in Leonardtown.

The rifle was seized as evidence. Interfering with hunters and having a loaded weapon in a vehicle both carry a maximum fine of $1,500.

The NRP says intentionally interfering with the lawful pursuit and taking of wildlife by another person or harassing, driving or disturbing any game animal intentionally for the purpose of disrupting a lawful hunt is against state law.

The only part I can't figure out is...since when did dope-smoking PETA-heads start owning guns?

Well, the good news is that we won't have to go to Hallmark to buy this guy a Congratulations card for finally getting into Mensa.

You would probably be surprised how many of them do, but when it started, I have no idea.

Don't kid yourself. Many of those types would have no problem plugging you or me. They just don't want anyone to hurt Bambi.

It is actually a mental problem they have. It's not that they love animals so much. It's that they hate prople.

The answer is obvious: They always have, they just don't want you to own one. "I got mine, but you can't have yours."

Simple.

I am pro hunter, but since when doesn't a man have a right to drive around on his own property shooting a rifle?

Any PETA Pansy who interferes with hunting on other peoples land, or on public land ought to be busted hard, but this may go too far.

I think the issue here is that he was firing the thing in order to interrupt the hunting going on at ajacent properties. It's not illegal to fire a weapon on your own property, but doing it to be malicious toward hunters is. If there weren't these laws in place, then neighbors of property where there is legal hunting could use their own property to foil hunters all over the place. With these laws in place, the extremists are the only ones that will cause the hunters trouble.

My problem with it is that it is like the 'Hate Crime' laws. You have to determine the guys intent in order to convict him. You are criminalizing his thought process, not his act.

Pulliam drove back and forth on the property line in his vehicle and discharged numerous rounds from a 30-30-caliber rifle.

Maybe he was hunting geese too.

My point is that it's his property. He has a legal right to shoot just because he feels like it, unless you can 'prove' he was doing it to disrupt the neighboring hunters. That is criminalizing his thoughts, not his actions. It is a type of hate crime law.
