"... Of course, reading between the lines; at a tax rate of 50% on $170,000, $22000 is a yearly payment of $11,000."

The matriarchal socialist republic of Kanuckistan's present tax code effectively reverses your math:
Since 1998, the payor pays the income tax on child support - which the Judge was very careful to call this misandrist theft - while the recipient receives it tax free.
(this amounts to a massive tax windfall for the government since payors are generally in a higher bracket than recipients but that's a whole 'nother story!)

Bottom line: this Court Ordered levy is effectively more like $44,000 off the Doctor's gross income.

Since the father is a doctor, he could easily immigrate tot he U.S., increase his salary and avoid paying "child support" to his adult child. He would be outside the jurisdiction of the Canadian family courts.

In making the ruling, one judge referred to Jennifer as "an exemplary student."

Question: If she is an "exemplary student", why does she need/want daddy to kick in half the cost of med school? You'd think she'd have her pick of scholorships, grants, etc.

Seems to me that this is an example of "..from each according to his ability to each according to their need." The principle in question here is NOT legal obligation. The separation agreement referenced CHILD support, not ADULT OFFSPRING support, and this man was ordered to pay additional education fees for reasons completely extra-legal - such as the daughter's grades; would the judge have ordered the man to pay if she'd barely made the cut-off to enter med school? Would he have been made to pay extra education fees if he was a store clerk? Would he have been ordered to do this if the daughter was a son?

Unfortunately no - many U.S. jurisdictions (not certain how many but most likely a majority) have reciprocal arrangements with Canada when it comes to child and spousal support Orders.

Actually, in some respects, things are considerably worse for fathers in some parts of the U.S.
As example, in Kanuckistan, it's still fairly rare to see fathers jailed for noncompliance with such Orders.

Men who walk away from Mom -probably to a young trophy wife- walk away from their kids in far too many cases. Some men -not all- seem to think Mom and the kids are a package deal. Personally, I don't think this guy should be forced to pay, but he is a loser for not wanting to help his daughter.

"Men who walk away from Mom -probably to a young trophy wife- walk away from their kids in far too many cases."

It's truly unfortunate when otherwise well intentioned and legitimately conservative women (taking your FR homepage at face value) offer up assumptions having no basis in fact and which plainly result from passive acceptance of the msn's anti male, pro radical feminist propaganda.

Aside from your statement ignoring any possible wrong-doing on the part of the mother in the article cited which may have contributed to the divorce, women - not men - initiate the vast majority of such actions largely because they know that, thanks to no-fault divorce and overt gender bias within the "family" Courts, their odds of "winning" are extremely high.

Please see: "These Boots Are Made for Walking: Why Wives File for Divorce" - authored by Margaret F. Brinig and Douglas W. Allen and published by George Mason University School of Law & Simon Fraser University Department of Economics

Note: about halfway down the cited page above there's a link to a well documented Word chart which very conclusively shows which gender it is that initiates most divorce actions.

Yes, you are correct...in Canada, child support was deductable until recently, when some exwife appealed, and henceforth child support, is not/not deductable, however exwife support is deductable....still doesn't alter, the male-hate that is persuasive in Canada.....

It's *expensive* to get divorced. Married parents aren't forced to pay for their kids' college expenses.

I know four women who are raising kids by themselves. Dad sends money but never shows up to visit. One Dad told his child not to call as it wakes the new baby...he'll call when he gets a chance. A little girl comes home with my daughter and my teenage girl watches her sister and the other little girl. I have seen this child cry when Dad didn't show up-no phone calls or anything. When I called he said he meant to call...it's a sad situation. This is not a conservative issue. It happens The Dads have started new families and the kids were part of their old life. I know several woman who left their kids too. I feel bad for the kids. If you read my Blurb on Free Republic, you know I am happily married to a terrific guy. But it's a sad world out there. I have been a Director of a Day Care and taught Chemistry. Kid are treated like dirt today in my opinion. I work in business now because I am home one hour after my kids get home. My husband is usally home when they arrive. All the kids in the neighborhood come to our house in the afternoon for snacks and/or homework help (no one is home at quite a few houses). I live in a upper middle class neighborhood; this is not a class issue either.
