Americans reject U.N. relief control: Only 34% believe global body should lead Asia tsunami effort

Only 34 percent of Americans believe the United Nations should be in charge of international relief efforts for victims of the South Asia tsunami that killed more than 150,000 people Dec. 26, according to a survey.

The Rasmussen Reports poll of 1,000 adults also found 83 percent believe the United States is generous when confronted with the emergency needs of other nations.

Just 12 percent believe the U.S. is stingy, a question apparently prompted by U.N. Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland's negative assessment of the U.S. and other Western nations in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami.

Support for the United Nations contrasted widely between Republicans and Democrats, according to the survey, conducted Jan. 8-9.

Among Republicans, 69 percent believe nations should help those in need directly rather than work through the United Nations while 44 percent of Democrats agree and 36 percent disagree.

Rasmussen found 38 percent of American adults have contributed money to relief organizations aiding victims of the disaster in Asia.

The survey indicated the proportion was the same across the political spectrum, with 38 percent of Republicans, 38 percent of Democrats and 38 percent of unaffiliated voters having made contributions.

Seventy-two percent of Americans have prayed for the victims and their families, Rasmussen discovered. This includes 83 percent of women and 60 percent of men. Unaffiliated voters are less likely to have prayed than either Republicans or Democrats.

Those who earn more than $75,000 a year are most likely to have contributed money. Those who earn less than $60,000 are most likely to have prayed, the survey found.

Rasmussen said 82 percent of Americans are following the news story somewhat or very closely. Those over 65 are paying closer attention than younger Americans.

I wish somebody would do a poll and reach the conclusion that the United Nations should cease to exist altogether.

34% is too much.

And yet...while it's appalling that 34% of the American people believe that the UN is the Answer to anything, that is way less than the percentage who voted for Gore or Kerry.

The MSM, "educators," the UCC and other liberal scum preach the UN's sacred authority. I wonder how the other 66% determined that the UN ought to be left out of the picture?

Who needs the United Nothings? In the tsunami-ravaged areas, American, Australian and Japanese relief workers are doing a fine job, without the need for direction from any UN agent looking for a good hotel and a good photo-op. Heck, our boys went to the rescue a full week before the UN showed up, and last I heard, the UN folks were still holding meetings to decide whether they should go to the bathroom or not.

It’s hard to believe that the organization responsible for the food for oil scandal is being given responsibility for the tsunami relief program. To make matters worse, there has been no housecleaning. Not only is it same organization, the same people are involved.

I wonder how much will be stolen this time.

Ever notice the percentage of America Haters seems fairly
consistant at 34%--and most probably is as inflated as the
percentage of homosexuals in America seems to be. Neither
group of aberrant idiots ought be encouraged.

"34% is too much."

It is still too much, but I am frankly surprised it is so low. I bet five years ago it would have been 66%. We are getting through(or maybe America's postWWII population is just growing up--at last).

The UN is already stealing relief money and living the life of luxury. People should ask how much this Egeland has spent on her personal expense account this month, whats She's eating for breakfast, lunch and supper, how many new dresses she has bought, what kind of Hotel rooms and service she gets, etc. and ask to see reciepts of how much she has personaly donated from her lavish salary to aid agencies. If all that was exposed, you would have the perfect picture of UN pigs at the trough.

Meanwhile, food rotts on the airport runway because these same UN people refuse to put on a pair of jeans and a t shirt and get their manicured hands dirty. Meetings acomplish nothing, except create a need for more meetings, fine fatty French luncheon menu's and French wine.
