I saw the news tonight and there was mention of the Cole County Sheriff and I thought they reported that he had been found dead at his home. They indicated that it was likely suicide. Anyone else hear anything about this?

Cole County Sheriff George Brooks Dead
1/11/2005, Cole County
He took office eleven days ago, but this evening, Cole County Sheriff George Brooks is dead. Brooks' wife found his body just after three this afternoon inside their home in Cole County. The Highway Patrol is investigating, but at this point it looks to be a suicide.
Sheriff Brooks was just sworn in at the first of the year. A former investigator for the Missouri Department of Corrections, Brooks worked in county law enforcement for more than two decades. He rose through the ranks to become Sheriff John Hemeyer's chief deputy. When Hemeyer stepped down from office last spring, the Cole County commission appointed Brooks to fill out the term. In November, voters elected Brooks to a four-year term as sheriff. We'll have more details on this story as they become available.
I heard a live press conference on 950 AM on my drive home from Jefferson City to Columbia about 5:50 PM.
The two Cole County officials holding the press conference refused to confirm anything other than that he was dead. Cole County Commissioner and Prosecuting Attorney, I think that's who was holding the press conference.
The only thing that crosses my mind is that the Cole Count Sherriff must have been about to be indicted for something.

Anyway, the Eagle stated they'd have more information later this evening about the Sheriff.
I've been listening for updates on the police officer's condition from last evening. The suspect died earlier today. The other officer was released and doing OK.
I shot the Sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy, too.
Bad dog, go lay down by your dish. :^(
Taaaaacky!
;-)
Had he been involved with the Clinton's at any time in his life?
I couldn't help it. It's the first thing that popped into my head when the original question was asked.
Actually, I heard that his wife works for Tackett's office. I don't know of any problems the sheriff may have had but Bill Tackett has recently been dogged with allegations of misconduct.
Probably no connection but here is a link to a story about Tackett's recent troubles.

My first impression was I wonder how many states have a Cole County?
It would be nice to identify the STATE as well as the town or county on these posts, especially since FRee Republic is a WORLD WIDE forum!
Missouri
The devil made you do it.
It says so under topics at the top!
He may be the Prince of Darkness, but he has a few suggestions that appeal to me occasionally.
Thanks for posting, this is sad news.
Prayers for his wife, his family, and friends for consolation in this sorrowful time.
Posted on Tue, Jan. 11, 2005 JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Eleven days after taking elective office, Cole County Sheriff George R. Brooks was found dead in his home Tuesday by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff's office said.
Cole County Commissioner Bob Jones said Brooks' body was found shortly before 3 p.m. His wife found him, growing concerned after Brooks, 53, missed two appointments earlier in the day, television station KRCG reported.
In November, Brooks was elected to a four-year term as sheriff after being appointed interim sheriff earlier in the year to succeed Sheriff John Hemeyer, who retired. During his 18-year career in law enforcement, Brooks served as a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and worked for the Department of Corrections.
Cole County chief deputy sheriff Gary Woodward asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol to investigate Brooks' death, the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Cole County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Tackett was automatically appointed acting sheriff, until the Cole County Commission meets to name an acting sheriff and set a special election, Jones said. He did not say when an acting sheriff would be named, but he said the commission planned to meet Wednesday.
Earlier, the sheriff's office had identified Woodward as the interim sheriff, but by law, the prosecutor immediately takes over those duties until the commission can act.
Highway Patrol Capt. Chris Ricks said the patrol was proceeding with a death investigation.
"There's nothing to indicate this was not suicide, but we've got to make sure," he said.
Ricks said it was tough for those in the county and law enforcement who knew Brooks.
"It's the slug in the stomach you don't want," he said.
Tackett said Brooks will be remembered for his dedication to law enforcement.
"He was very one-on-one with people, very personal," Tackett told KRCG. "I think that's what really distinguished him. He had a way of dealing with issues that were emotional, that were conflict-ridden, in a very methodical, slow, thought out fashion. And that's what he brought to law enforcement was personality, his demeanor."
Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon expressed shock as word of Brooks' death reached him.
"I'm thunderstruck and saddened for the thousands of people in central Missouri who were lucky enough to know and serve with Sheriff Brooks," Nixon told The Associated Press.
