Putin's claims strain Israeli-Russian relations
By JPOST.COM STAFF

Russian President Vladimir Putin's claim that Israeli officials aided Ukrainian opposition candidate Viktor Yuschenko on the campaign trail has led to a serious break in Russian-Israeli relations, Channel 2 TV reported Tuesday evening.

Putin further accused Israel of financing Yuschenko in the presidential race against Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, the candidate he preferred.

The Russian president claimed that the Israeli government could have prevented the financial sponsorship of Yuschenko. Putin's close associates additionally charged Israel of supporting the Russian opposition.

Israel denies the charges, the Channel 2 report noted.

Did it ever occur to Mr. Putin that maybe the Ukranian people got sick and tired of their corrupt government?

Whenever ancient Chinese empire suffered a setback, standard Confucian advice to the Emperor was "you ought to be perfecting your rule". But then, China has a long tradition of civilization.

The story is now sourced. I see nothing about a court order banning publication of the story (although I know that Israel will censor news for national security purposes so it is not inconceivable a court ruled on the issue already and let the story go forward).

To our resident pan-slavists...

Yes, clearly it was a Jewish plot to dismember Holy Mother Russia.

Putin blames even Israel now?? Moscow claimed previously that Yushchenko is anti-Semite!! Nice to know that Israel aided Ukrainian anti-Semites. :-) Is not Putin pitiful?

Well it's not the only plot in town.

Acts of Faith: What does it mean that Putin gave a Christmas Tree to the Jewish capital of Russia?

Oh the beam in Putins eye. Putin spent $200 million on the loser, why then shouldn't Israel spend money on Yuschenko? Did Putin think everyone was going to run away and just let him fake the election in the Ukraine. This guy is becoming a bigger loser by the day.

Yuschenko might not be an anti-semite himself but his supporters are mostly Nationalists that are. Most of the people that we (meaning my husband and I,) know who speak russian are in our own synagogue (in LA) and they are very worried about Nationalists getting control in Ukraine. Yanukovych is an "Oligarch" and a liberal but not a Nationalist at least. Even through Kuchma is definitely an anti semite. Remember what he said when the Ukrainian battle ship shot down the Israeli pane that was flying Russian Jews home for the holiday? "It could of been worse." What a facist! Who ever won in Ukraine it would'nt be too great for Ukrainian Jews. I'm surprised Israel got involved, maybe they hope all the Jewish Ukrainians will come home to Israel now?

Yes. He really appreciated their help in training their special forces on anti-terrorist drills. Now that the training is over and he got what he wanted, he can back to hating Jews like the rest of Europe. Never trusted Putin to begin with.

I've long wondered how on Earth Russia/Magog would ever come up with justification for the coming invasion of Israel.

The USA, that is the N.E.D. did interfere in the Ukraininan election but GWB did not have anything to do with it! No one has any control over the N.E.D., not the President or the congress or even the CIA! The N.E.D. gave more then $60 millions to the Yuschenko campaine , including bringing Yuschenko to the US to meet high up muckety mucks in the N.E.D. and some big name Liberals in the US goverment. Colon Powell is the only one in the Bush administration that got involved, though. But only to make sure the new election was fair.

Nationalist are always minority, I’m aware that they supported Yushchenko but he had much larger electorate. Now to become reliable president he will ignore radicals.

Acts of Faith: What does it mean that Putin gave a Christmas Tree to the Jewish capital of Russia?

Birobizhan was the "Jewish Autonomous Region" created by Stalin so that the Jews could have a "homeland" and not want to emigrate to some non-Communist place. Most of the Jews who ended up there wanted to be someplace else.

Birobizhan is enjoying a Jewish religious revival but for a very long time it was really the last place you could find Judiasm or Jews.

Declining population, crumbling infrastructure, corrupt business climate, inept spook government. Can another new missle test demonstrating Pootie's "strength" be far behind?

Standard idiocy for internal consumption. To round up the usual suspects, he still needs to bring up "Masonic conspiracy" and maybe "The Vatican". "The West" he has already brought. Verily, he better be perfecting his rule so as to make it more appealing and attractive, but societal self-knowledge and introspection have never been the strong suit over there.
