MEMBER OF N.Y. FILM CRITICS CIRCLE BLASTS MICHAEL MOORE FOR NO-SHOW Tuesday, January 11 2005 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The lead film critic of the New York Daily News has taken Michael Moore to task for ditching an appearance at the New York Film Critics Circle dinner awards ceremony where he would have picked up a Best Documentary award for Fahrenheit 9/11 and instead flying to California to receive the favorite movie award on the televised People's Choice Awards. Saying that Moore's actions deserved an award for "Slight of the Year," Jack Mathews commented, "He chose the nonaward over the award, the patronizing TV show over a dinner with peers, the photo op over the credibility op. He chose to patronize the public as bastions of good taste, and to pretend that his anti-Bush screed had captured the fancy of a nation." Mathews remarked that it is unclear to him how Fahrenheit won the top award for favorite film. "Typically," he noted,"the film that sells the most tickets wins this award." Other analysts have pointed out that this year the producers of the show altered its selection procedure, ending their deal with the Gallup organization to conduct a scientific poll of moviegoers and instead conducting a vote on the Internet, subjecting the voting process to politicking and the equivalent of ballot-box stuffing.

Two bogus awards. People's choice ruined by internet voting, the other by an abundance of leftwinger movie reviewers

The latter isn't bogus. Their award to Moore aside, the critics' awards are generally much more indicative of good films then either the Oscars or fluff like the People's Choice awards. Which award isn't bogus then?

Well, Ambrose Bierce wrote that a man cannot be in two places at once unless he is a bird.

Jack Mathews: "Michael, we love you too! You have enough girth, share it with us. We wanted to kiss your ass first!"

Seems to me that Moore is large enough to be in two places at once....

Awwwwww, Mikey didn't show up for your award and now you're SAAAAAAAD! Poor baby!

Putting aside my opinion of Moore, why would he need your silly little snob critics award to give him credibility? Is there anyone who doesn't like Moore who'd think "Hmmm, THEY gave him an award? Maybe I was wrong about this guy!"

Matthews will be singing Mikey's praises the next time he makes another Republican-bashing film and all will be forgiven.

Pissy bitching.

At least the critics saved money on the buffett. They should be thankful.

. . . a dinner with peers . . .

Who wouldn't pass up a dinner with Michael Moore's self-confessed peers?

According to Reuters; Moore picked the People's Choice Award because they had that new Hardee's Monster Burger while the NY Critics were serving up veggie plates.

I all "awards" and "studies" disappeared off the face of the earth I would be a happy person.

They are all meaningless IMHO.

Do you think there should be discussion of the arts? If so why shouldn't people with an expertise in the field take a poll each year to see what the consensus was? The results are instructive as to where the discourse is at any given time. People are free to pay as much or as little attention to any given award as they like.

Absolutely there should be discussions but is the awards that drive me nuts.

How on earth can you take one performance out of an entire year and give "Best Actor" to a single person.

I read reviews etc but hate the narrowing of the field to one person or film or book or play.

The "ten best" thing makes more sense to me.

Fair enough. A lot of artists feel that way. I just get irked when people put down the idea of arts criticism. They inevitabley follow that up with "Here's what I thought!"

I love the arts but have no talent.

A friend of mine,an artist, once told me,"We need people like you or who would appreciate our work?".

I never criticised art criticism----it is "the best" awards I can't abide.

(LOL!) By Jupiter! Then you're just the thing the post-modernist-cutting edge-elitist-NY scene-Tina Brown and her "serious" A-Listers art world is looking for!

Gosh...and to think we here at FR
knew you when...(sigh)
