Jet Li recalls tsunami terror
10/01/2005 - 16:32:32
Martial arts superstar Jet Li has spoken of his terror, running from the Indian Ocean tidal wave last month.
The Hero actor was holidaying in the Maldives with his family when the tsunami hit the coast line and caused widespread death and destruction to the surrounding countries.
At a celebrity fundraiser concert in Hong Kong on Friday, Li told the audience: "The waves came really quickly and formed swirls. I carried my daughters and pulled my maid and ran.
"I'd only walked three steps when I realised that the water had already come up to my waist. When I looked back, everything I saw minutes ago was gone. Everything was surrounded by the ocean. The houses collapsed.
"I continued to run but the water was already up to my mouth."
Li and his family managed to find lifejackets in their hotel as they waited for a second round of bigger waves to hit the island.
Li has donated 120,000 to the tsunami relief fund and marks the tragic event as a defining moment in his life.
He adds: "Some things I dared not do in the past, I am ready to do them now."
Like the Tim McGraw(sp?) says "Live like you were dyin'"....
One line the water is up to his mouth while trying to save his daughters and his maid, the next line he's at his hotel and had "found" some lifejackets?
What sort of ding-dong edits a story like that? It's a non-story.
Dude, sounds like it was time to revert to swimming. But, if anyone can run in that much water, he can. Dang, glad he and the family are ok.

Thought the same. . .am assuming there is no wife as well. . .
It is amazing how often stories that look/feel like 'cut-n paste' projects make it to print.
In this reporting, 'something is not better than nothing'. . .
I'm calling BS on his story
Not so much running IN the watter as running ON it.
There ya go. I mean, we're talking about Jet Li here.
So he grabs both of his daughters, throws his made on his back and charges up a beach with water up to his nose. The man is amazing I tell ya!!
Perhaps the fault is in the translation, not the original story.
Please tell me your tagline is a joke and Swayze never said that.
Looks like this tsunami might be just the thing to kickstart Jet's career...
He did say it!
Well then, I must know all there is to know about the UK as I had an English muffin for breadfast. Sheesh! ;-)
Yo! Expert on Hunan Province China here .....
Its like when the story ends his nmouth is still moving.
Well the context does not save his story. . .and then again. ..maybe it does. I mean, the tsunami was Bush's fault; so that does put it proper persepctive.
Glad to hear the 'rest of the story'. . .
