One person died and at least 15 others were seriously injured Saturday when a pickup truck loaded with illegal entrants crashed while trying to evade police on U.S. 191 south of Willcox.
About 6 p.m., a Department of Public Safety officer on patrol saw the Ford F250 northbound on the highway near Sunsites, about 25 miles south of Willcox. The officer checked the vehicle's license plate, which confirmed the truck was stolen, said Officer Frank Valenzuela, a DPS spokesman in Phoenix.
The officer tried stopping the truck, which then fled.
About the same time the officer called in a pursuit on his radio, the driver of the truck lost control and crashed, Valenzuela said.
The truck was the only vehicle involved in the collision, Valenzuela said. There was no estimate of the truck's speed or cause of the collision in preliminary information.
One person was dead at the scene and at least 15 others were seriously injured. Officers suspect a number of other people ran from the collision. All are believed to be illegal entrants, Valenzuela said.
Several helicopters from Tucson and surrounding areas took the injured to hospitals.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Department assisted the DPS in securing the area, said spokeswoman Carol Capas. A deputy was headed to assist before the crash but didn't arrive at the scene until afterward, she said.
As Southern Arizona's only Level 1 trauma center, University Medical Center received three of the most serious patients, all adult men, said Katie Riley, a hospital spokeswoman.
Other injured were taken to hospitals in Benson and Willcox.
Jeeez, just the helicopter bill is going to be skyhigh, never mind the hospital bills :-)
Who's paying for all this? Oh, nevermind...
If their media operates like ours does, those tapes would never see the light of day. After all, can't be scaring the peasants, who will be sending millions of dollars back to Mother Mexico, can they?
Well at least this time they didn't kill and maim a bunch of the local citizens.
I'd still like to see a follow-up on that last incident. We know who paid the tab on the illegals. But who paid for Jim and Emilia's funeral? Who paid the medical expenses on the dozen American citizens who were severely injured?
So now it's illegal "entrants"? How much more can the press water this down?
I don't even have to ask to know that it wasn't the State or Mexico or el Zorro. Hell I'd be surprised if el Zorro even sent flowers and a not of apology.
Hey! That's an improvement and movement towards our side from "undocumented migrant."
I'm dreaming - he doesn't.
The President doesn't want to offend his buddy el Zorro. He would rather American taxpayers foot the bills, which are in the billions. He sure isn't afraid of offending us.
Sounds like they caught a cat in a dog suit at Westminster.
Yep, highly doubtful. But then again, none of our own politicians said word one about the incident.
This nation is going into the sh!tter. No nation has ever come back from where we are to live again.
Stolen vehicle + insurance costs, LEOs time & expenses, many chopper flights, treatment of injuries especially three requiring trauma center treatment, legal & court costs, feeding & housing the criminals for some period of time -- all at taxpayer expense.
Send Vicente Fox the bill!
Oh, right, I forgot to put the criminal's funeral or flight home for same on my list of costs to society...
From the last major crash. Two dead Americans, four Mexicans. Twenty-five injured; fifteen had to be flown out to the trauma centers in Tucson and Phoenix.
The coyote and driver are being held on death penalty charges, but I expect the government will pussy out and let them cop a plea.
Still a better description than "undocumented migrant" which used to be the PC description de jour.
Send it? I want it hand delivered to el Zorro by a new Gen "Black-Jack" Pershing at the head of a 2nd Mexican Punative mission into Mexico!
