Racist Boondocks Cartoon in Sunday papers 1/9/05
Philadelphia Inquirer | 1/9/05 | American Infidel

Posted on 01/09/2005 7:31:05 AM PST by American Infidel

I know I shouldn't be nearly as angry as I am over this (In fact, I know I shouldn't even care), but I couldn't help but notice that featured prominently on the top of the front page of the comic section of today's Philadelphia Inquirer (big surprise) was today's blatantly racist Boondocks comic strip. The strip in question consisted of one frame in which two young black characters observed a white character jogging in the snow while dressed for warm weather. The line written for the black characters is simply “White People”. The implication was obviously that only white people would do something as stupid as to go jogging in the winter, while being dressed for warmer weather. Imagine for a moment that the strip consisted of two white men waiting for a bus to take them to work while observing a black man sitting on the corner, drinking a 40 ounce malt liquor beverage, with the line, “Black People” coming from one of the white characters, implying that only black people would be sitting on the corner on a week day, getting drunk while other people were on their way to work. Not only would this strip never see the light of day, but all future strips from the cartoonist would have been cancelled. The Philadelphia Inquirer on the other hand, chooses to run the strip and to feature it prominently at the top of the front page of the comic section. I understand that Aaron McGruder is the “voice of angry black America” and that he must be treated with kid gloves, otherwise they will be accused of being racist and no corporate entity wants that kind of P.R., but this is ridiculous. It's not the strip itself that ticked me off (it was sort of humorous actually), it was the hypocrisy and the double standard of UPI, the Philly Inquirer, and the other urban newspapers that I am sure ran the strip today. OK that's my rant. Thanks for listening.

Frankly, Doonesbury is much farther left and more irritating to me. Can't stand Trudeau's daily commie diatribes and his stuff is anything but funny-hence why does it appear in the comics pages? Is that yet another of my pungent rhetorical questions that will never be answered by newspaper editors to whom I have posed the question?

Uncle Remus in The Song of the South is not a slave. At one point he up and leaves the plantation where he works. The story is set in the post-war era.

I had to search to see who Chappelle is, but when I found him, I knew who he was. He is hysterical. Some one sent me an email, of "How Not to Get Arrested".

That was Chris Rock.

Macgruder is a racist and he needs to be taken out of all newspapers.

I agree that McGruder is racist but I don't agree censorship is what we should do about it. Let the Democrats show their true colors.

That's pretty bad. It's not as bad as some he's done but still par for McGruder-- which is bad. I'm not surprised, though.

What's more surprising is why McGruder and his syndicate would decide to slack off by creating a one-panel joke (that could run easily as a daily) for what is normally supposed to be a multi-panel, full-color Sunday comic.

I live in a state where the temps are usually high. I've seen black people dressed as if they were in freezing Alaska, when I'm in shorts. As they go by in their wool hats, overcoats, gloves, scarfs, I marvel, but I've never said to anyone "Black people". I figure they're just cold

I dunno. Although the strip can be annoying, why are we taking the 'rat sensibility and getting our panties in a wad about this?

To me, conservatives rock because we can laugh and take jokes and not get hung up on being politically correct. Why are we descending to the lib level?

You may not have the chip on your shoulder that McGruder has.

I think it's the hypocrisy involved. Most people here have found it funny even if it is racist. Some have suggested ways it could be just as funny but not racist. I don't think may are really offended.

Then they should have said the guy was crazy for what he was doing, not crazy because he is white.

Let's change the caption to :

"Looks like another midlife crisis running by."

But you know what? You'd be offending people that were sensitive about their age.

The fact that the two characters in the strip are black, makes it funny because the guy is white. IMO, comedians and comic strips don't need to be politically correct. You don't like them, you don't watch them or read them.

I live in a predominantly white neighborhood. I grew up and went to school in a predominantly black neighborhood. Having seen both sides of the coin, I can laugh at whatever I please. There's truth in that comic strip, and there's truth in the joke I made about black people not running in the snow. I can laugh at both jokes.

I can tell you, I did not find it a least bit funny a few years back when the neighbor called the police on the new black neighbor that was jogging down the street in the summer. Me and my white family wanted to go kick the trash out of the neighbor that called. I imagine the cops were very embarrassed about having to respond to this. You know, you have to put comics/humor, real/life and seriousness in perspective. Only then can you really laugh or cry.

i refuse to even acknowledge Doonesbury exists...

and since my fishwrap paper usually lies in a puddle for 12 hours before we pick it us and throw it away, I don't acknowledge much else in the paper...

if we didn't want the local sports news in print, we'd save a buck or 2.....

That was Chris Rock.

LOL...well then. I believe Chris Rock or Chappelle would probably respond by saying, "That crazy old white woman just can't tell us apart."

I've seen Chappelle on Comedy Channel. I think they both are hysterical. Do you have the Chris Rock clip? You should post it. Usually, I get annoyed with comedians that use profanity, but in that clip, it was appropriate. It made the point.

I like Jeff Foxworthy, but not for really long periods of time. I guess some Southerners could find him offensive, but he is from the South. Southern humor is different, and I find it hysterical.

I could probably do standup about people in NJ and NY, but I'd probably end up buried in the Meadowlands with Hoffa. I grew up at Exit 13 and actually worked on the turnpike. Exit 13 lost it's claim to fame, once they closed down the slaughterhouse and the refineries had to conform to the EPA standards. Really, it wasn't the refineries stinking up the place, it was the slaughterhouse. But, the refineries had more money so they took the big hit.

Do you watch Brian Regan? He just came out with a new dvd/video. I didn't get to see all of it. My son just bought it a few weeks ago. What I heard of it was really funny. I never liked that Cho. You know, I think that's my plan for tonight, I'm going to watch the Brian Regan.

Now, to make your interpretation funny, since the black guy has the gun...it should be "black people, urgh".
