THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN OXNARD HAS ISSUED A
* FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR... THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY VALLEYS AND MOUNTAINS INCLUDING THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS AND ADJACENT FOOTHILLS THIS INCLUDES THE VERDALE...SIMI AND PADUA BURN AREAS
* UNTIL 1000 AM PST
* AT 555 AM PST...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADARS INDICATED A LARGE AREA OF HEAVY RAIN WITH SOME EMBEDDED INTENSE SHOWERS PUSHING INTO LOS ANGELES COUNTY. RAINFALL RATES OF ONE HALF INCH TO ONE INCH PER HOUR ARE EXPECTED...WHICH WILL CAUSE FLASH FLOODING IN THE WARNING AREA. MUDSLIDES...ROCKSLIDES AND DEBRIS FLOW ARE LIKELY...ESPECIALLY IN AND BELOW THE BURN AREAS.

I really would like to know how Californians afford homes out there?? My husband, a native Californian left there in the 80's and sold his Dana Point condo fo $100K and now this tiny 2 bedroom is selling for $400K. Obscene!

Anybody trying to drive PCH into Malibu today, I can tell you already, that you need to cancel your plans.
On the news, there was mention of a 10 year old boy who was knocked off his feet in only a few inches deep and fast moving water.
Yesterday a 30 year old man driving his SUV slid off Topanga Canyon Blvd. The SUV flipped over and landed in a creek only five feet deep. A witness to the accident phoned LA County Fire Dept. and Swift Water Rescue arrived within minutes. The man drowned.

In New Mexico it's not officially a flash flood until a nino clutching an abandoned box-spring reaches 30 mph in the arroyo.
This is the heaviest and longest duration rainfall I remember. It's long overdue, just like the drought/rain cycle you mentioned. The water is running into the sewers and straight on to the Los Angeles River/viaduct then onward to the ocean.

At 615 am... National Weather Service Doppler radars showed moderate to locally heavy rainfall across much of the advisory area... with additional rain developing offshore. The heaviest rain was falling in Los Angeles County and eastern Ventura County. Flash flooding and mudslides are likely to occur across Los Angeles County this morning. Of particular concern are the Simi... Padua and verdale burn areas. In addition... the hills above Malibu and above Beverly Hills and the Hollywood Hills... are also particularly susceptible due to their south facing aspects.
Flash flood warnings remain in effect until 1000 am PST for southern Santa Barbara County including the Santa Ynez range and for the Ventura County mountains and valleys. This includes the Gaviota... Piru and Simi burn areas. Flooding has occurred at creek Road and San Antonio creek in Ojai. Cars have been reported trapped by mud in southern Santa Barbara County. Two lanes of Highway 101 southbound were closed north of the Highway 33 interchange.
A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 1000 am PST for the lower Ventura river. At 400 am PST... the lower Ventura river was above flood stage... with the gage at Foster Park reporting a flow of 26400 cubic feet per second. Additional heavy rainfall moving across the area will maintain the river level above flood stage through the morning hours.
Flooding has been reported in the Ventura rv park this morning. The city of Ventura has evacuated the rv park. The Main Street bridge is being monitored for possible flood closure. Flood waters are not currently expected to reach the level of the 101 freeway bridge.
A Flood Warning is in effect for the Santa Clara river from the Sespe creek confluence to the river mouth until 9 PM PST tonight. The flow on the Santa Clara river at Freeman diversion is forecast to rise to near 80000 cubic feet per second by noon today.
Flooding has already occurred on Ventura Road in Oxnard. Other areas affected will include the McGrath State Beach area near the Santa Clara river mouth.
A Flood Warning remains in effect for Sespe creek from 5 miles north of Fillmore to the Santa Clara river in Ventura County until 3 PM PST today. At 2 am... the height of Sespe creek at Fillmore was 16.1 ft. It is forecast to fluctuate near 16.0 ft thru at least noon today. This will cause flooding along the lower Sespe creek drainage from 5 miles north of Fillmore to the Santa Clara river.
Periods of rain... heavy at times... will continue across San Luis Obispo... Santa Barbara... Ventura... and Los Angeles counties today. Rainfall rates are expected to average one quarter of an inch to one half inch per hour today... with local rainfall rates in excess of one inch per hour. Due to the southerly low level flow... rainfall rates and amounts are expected to be highest across the south facing slopes of the Santa Ynez... San Gabriel and topa topa mountains and adjacent foothills... including the Santa Clara River Valley in Ventura County... and the Santa Barbara County South Coast.
With the ground already completely saturated from the recent heavy rainfall... the long duration of moderate to heavy rainfall expected will likely cause flooding of roadways and small streams. Conditions will remain favorable for mudslide and rockslide activity and flash flooding through Tuesday. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Tuesday for the continued potential for significant and possibly life-threatening flooding across the region. Mainstem river flooding is also possible through Tuesday... and a Flood Watch for river flooding will remain in effect through Tuesday for the lower Santa Clara river... the Ventura river and Sespe creek. Please refer to the latest Flood Watch (laxffalox) for further details.
