HONOLULU (AP) - A nuclear submarine ran aground about 350 miles south of Guam, injuring several sailors, one of them critically, the Navy said.
There were no reports of damage to the USS San Francisco's reactor plant, which was operating normally, the Navy said.
Jon Yoshishige, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet based at Pearl Harbor, said the Friday afternoon incident is under investigation and the 360-foot submarine was headed back to its home port in Guam.
Details on the sailors' injuries were not immediately available. The sub has a crew of 137, officials said.
Military and Coast Guard aircraft from Guam were en route to monitor the submarine and assist if needed, the Navy said.
Guam is a U.S. territory about 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.

Actually there were other extenuating circumstances which got the skipper in trouble. Try Googling 'USS Enterprise + grounding' - I found some interesting stuff just yesterday while researching that incident for another purpose.
Thanks for all the good info, and explanations..Just wondering..when an incident like this occurs..what's the procedure for notifications UP the chain of command..to whom, how fast, and how high? Also..can I assume that the dates in all the stories are local time..i.e. on the other side of the IDL, and thus a day "ahead" of us?
Good ol' Mare Island Naval Shipyard .. :-)
Home for a year in my life while I was Navy schooling ,,Marine Barracks,, 1973
Something like this would go straight to the top. First, the boat would make a voice report to the force commander within five minutes of coming to comms depth. That's followed by a text message addressed to the the fleet CINC amonst many others, with followups as required.
Something like this would make it the SECNAV level for sure.
" What if this is a
cover up for something clandestine?"
Worth repeating. What if they hit something man made...or something man made hit them?
SSBN 631 GOLD "Ulysses S Grant" Here....
Man the Quarter Masters and the Nav have got to be crapping their pants about now. I was a Navigation Electronics tech on the Grant and I know they must be shaking in thier boots about now.
Man that's bad ...real bad.
On the sub note....any ping list here for ex or current submariners????
Dear Lord, please keep Zack and all of our sailors safe and bring them home well.
Jeez guys, give mud a break! His only real mistake so far was to include the name 'Clancy' the post he made way back in the thread.
1. I'm a sub-qualified ex-nuke.
2. Clancy's Submarine is not a novel - it's non-fiction and a not too bad overview of modern submarines and their operation. I thought it was well done, and ought to be required reading before non-submariners spout off on threads like this saying "Off with the captain's head!"
3. By my count it's now 'Couch Potatoes 4 - Know-it-alls 0' for Mudblood
Doohickey runs the newly created sub vet ping list. I'm sure he would be glad to add you!
I know what you mean about the nav Et's. I woudnt want to be in their shoes right now. The stress would be incredible.
Nice :)
I used my skills in the Nav too spring board me into PC's I loved my time on the sub. I was on a boomer so...life was good. Great shipmates...fun times...
I will head on over thanks!
Sounds like you just volunteered, deep Doo! (heh heh)
When you make the list, put me on it!
We had a sister ship hit a pinacle and we almost lost her.
Running aground is no laughing matter it's life of death more often then naught. If they were underway submerged or snorkling it could have been very serious. I have not seen any pics..."not that their will be many" but was it bad?
I had a guy on my boat who was on the bonefish. That disel boat that burned and lost 2 crew members and was towed in. He was pretty freaked about it. God Bless everyone on that boat.
Davy Jones will not see them on this day.
Dude what is your problem.
Last time I recalled the "Steely eyed killers" had not done much killing recently. We are all submariners if we served and had fish. Do you?
Pig boats is a good term for some of the older Fast Attacks. But the recently created ones are more like cruise ships comparied to thier WWII counter parts.
Steely eyed killers...hhahahahahah
Bump for whatever bumped in the night.
On my last boat it was a 2nd class sonar girl; we called him 'Mole-man' because as far as any of knew he never saw daylight. He only left the boat at night when in port. Made occasional runs to NYC (this is pre-com days at EB) for his flicks and they were some real vintage stuff - like the first stag featuring John Holmes... you get the pic.
Military prayers needed!! My prayers going up for these Sailors.
Tonkin, thank you for the ping.
Blessings,
trussell
If you want on/off my prayer ping list, please let me know. All requests happily honored.
As long as it isn't the Reverend ... oh, never mind.
Thankyou and everyone for your prayers and concerns.
