Theme: Tribute To Elvis Presley

The FR Canteen Saturday Night Jukebox Proudly Presents:
A Tribute To The King of Rock N Roll -- Elvis Presley!
Today (January 8th) would have marked Elvis' 70th birthday.
In tribute to him, we are going to take a short journey through his life and music! If you would like to join the fun, please post anything Elvis today. If you would prefer to hear other music, please post all the requests on the thread, via FReepmail, or email us at canteenusa@canteenusa.com with "Music Request" in the subject line.

As always, please remember that the Canteen Music Dedication has always been about the Troops and their families.

Elvis Aaron Presley
Born: January 8th, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi
Parents: Gladys and Vernon Presley
Siblings: Jesse Presley (died at birth)
Children: Lisa Marie Presley born February 1, 1968
Died: August 16, 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee
Cause of Death: cardiac arrhythmia

  1. Known as the "King Of Rock"
  2. It is estimated that Elvis Presley has sold over one billion record units worldwide, more than anyone in record industry history. (From elvis.com)
  3. The only tours outside of America were all in Canada.
  4. Elvis has had no less than 149 songs to appear on Billboard’s Hot 100 Pop Chart in America.
  5. He was also a leading artist in the American country, R&B, and gospel fields, and his chart success in other countries was substantial.
  6. In 1961, Elvis gave a benefit concert at Bloch Arena in Hawaii that raised over $65,000 toward the building of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
  7. The 1984 W.C. Handy Award from the Blues Foundation in Memphis recognized Elvis for "keeping the blues alive in his music - rock and roll."
  8. In 1986, Elvis was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. His presenters were none other than Sean and Julian Lennon--the sons of John Lennon.
  9. Is a direct descendant of Abraham Lincoln's great-great grandfather, Isaiah Harrison.
  10. One of only a handful of artists inducted into both The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and The Country Music Hall of Fame. Others include Johnny Cash and Hank Williams.
  11. The Beatles were admirers of his work and although John Lennon said they enjoyed his company very much, Elvis himself, ironically, thought that the Beatles were a bad influence on America's youth.
  12. More people watched _Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii (1973)_ (live Via Satellite TV special) than watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.
  13. In 1975 he purchased a poor black East Memphis woman an electric wheel chair and picked her up and personally sat her in it. The woman's teenage daughter told Elvis she liked his car. He gave it to her and even gave her boyfriend a job.

More info about Elvis will be posted throughout the music dedication. Also, all the information can be found at www.elvis.com and www.imdb.com . There are hundreds of other places with Elvis info and pictures.

re #1095 and word usage: When my daughter was about a year old, another dispatcher and I were taking LEEP-funded classes at the OSU-branch campus along with some of the PD officers. We were all on break between classes. Probably 10 officers around the table, too. I either dropped or spilled something and said, "Shucky darnit!"

In unison, every officer around the table exclaimed, "Shucky darnit!?" and then they all cracked up laughing. (PD guys had "colorful" language and with a young daughter, I had to make a concerted effort not to think and speak aloud using their "inflections." And they had the nerve to mock me for it!)

re #1100:

Winglethorp's Mommy!!! #1100!!!

I'm going to refer to my older daughter as SB in the following story:

SB has a friend named Jenny who went to college with her. She let SB park her car at her apartment in D.C. when SB was flying to NYC for New Year's and took her to the airport then picked her back up. Jenny emailed SB this week asking for pictures of her hair. SB had no clue why, but emailed her pics that I had taken (love the cut...looks so good on her). SB came home today JUST to get her hair cut by this gal, Angelique (abbreviated Ang. some down below). When we went to the mall to get SB's haircut we were a little early so decided to go across the hallway to get a coffee....the line was long and eventually I suggested SB go on and I'd bring hers to her. So she did. Well going out as she was going in was a lady...the lady did a double-take, turned to SB and started crying. It was Jenny's mom. It took SB a few minutes but she finally figured out who she was. She looked so different from when she last saw her.

Jenny's mom had a bad accident several years ago and had a full body cast and is in major pain all the time...is turning 50 the end of this month, and has had a very, very rough time. She has felt so bad about herself, her looks, and her life in general. Jenny called her this week and told her to go to where SB gets her hair done and sent her pics of SB's hair! Told her to go there and get it done! (I think she paid for it...Jenny's mom is having a rough time financially, too). She was in pain this morning, but decided to try anyhow. She decided to check Ang. out. She wandered in and Angelique (the hairdresser) asked if she could help her. She told her why she was there and pulled out SB's picture. Angelique told Jenny's mom they had a 2:00 apt. open (I had called earlier and scheduled SB for 3...they had offered 2 o'clock, but I thought SB would be too rushed)...Angelique didn't take the call so didn't realize WHO was coming at 3, but knew the 2 was open. Ang. decided to call her friend upstairs in a mall store and ask her to do a total makeover (make-up) with Jenny's mom (Joyce) while she waited on the hair appt. She had no clue about the whole situation...but did that anyhow. She sensed Joyce needed it.

Joyce has some veins and problems from the accident on her face (I couldn't tell, but she said so) and the make-up totally hid that! Now, she got the make-over, got the hair done, and SB walked in (I came soon after). She broke down in tears...sobbing...and finally pulled herself together enough to talk. We went back in the little room where Ang. cuts the hair. She got Joyce some tissues. Joyce told us how down she'd been, how rough it had been, and how turning 50 with no bright hopes was really dragging her down. She told us how Jenny called and pushed her to get a simple haircut just because she had seen SB's. She told us how different she felt with a new haircut (which was gorgeous) and a make-over and the for the first time she could remember she'd been free from much of her pain while there. Then to run into SB was icing on the cake...it just overwhelmed her. While she was telling us all that, SB called Jenny on her cell, put the phone to Joyce's ear, and Joyce lost it all over again...had to tell Jenny the whole tale. We were all crying...SB, me, Joyce, Ang., and then the lady who did the make-up (I think Ang. called her to come down). Joyce had a hard time leaving. She said that she felt such a power and peace there, and "good". My daughter was such a joy to watch and see through all this. If I hadn't made the 3 instead of 2 appt....if I hadn't told SB to go on over from the coffee shop...if SB had chosen to park at the airport (like she'd planned to do originally)....so many "if's", this would never have happened. I'd never met this lady, but she lives just a few miles from me. We exchanged phone numbers and email addresses. I can never express in words the emotion, the "feeling", the miracle that happened today, but I do know that I am so blessed and don't even realize JUST HOW MUCH I am. So blessed.

I didn't do a thing...not one thing. If anyone did anything, it was her own daughter. I just was a bystander, really. But God still works.
