Hollywood does seem to make to many "remakes". Its probably because films are so damn expensive to make now. So some producer goes to the studio and says "hey you liked this film from the 60s, well let's just make it again!!" The reason there are so many remakes is because Hollywood has run out of ideas. On top of that, any film that earns a few dollars profit is fair game for a sequel for the same reason.

Can you imagine "Its a Wonderful Life" getting remade? It WAS remade, with Marlo Thomas in the Jimmy Stewart role (I am not making this up). It was so hideous and PC that I laughed until I had to go to the bathroom. After I came back I switched the channel.

For you trivia buffs, the reason they don't show the airplane landing in the original, is because it crashed upon landing and someone was killed.

A couple of years ago there were rumors floating around of Casablanca being remade with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez in the Bogart and Bergman roles. Either it was a hoax or whoever was thinking about doing it came to their senses. Thank goodness.

"the Last Starfigher" Is that the one where an alien planet is recruiting kids via video games to join their space force?

http://www.themoviespoiler.com/ Look here to find out. DON'T look here to find out. The reviewer is clueless about the multiple aeronautical mistakes in the remake and he laughs at some of the crudest jokes.

Originally, when film was a new medium, filmmakers drew from personal experience, education (including what they read-mark that) and with hard work and talent, produced great films. Now, the cultural frame of reference needed to produce film is exhausted, filmakers do NOT read and are NOT particularly well educated, but have seen a LOT of movies. 'Filmmakers' repeat and recycle what previously talented and innovative, 'thinking' filmmakers succeeded in doing with film. Now filmmakers make deals NOT MOVIES.

The remake starts with a dog being suffocated (yuk! yuk!) and has language so foul and so rude that I winced, and I was in the Navy for 28 years. Truly a move Hanks wants to forget. Reason #77 not to watch it then (as if I needed any more).

Isn't Spielberg directing a remake of "War of the Worlds?"

Family is probably the largest customer segment. But presumably, when they put out violent vulgar stuff, they're targeting a different segment, no? I don't know. Just speculating. I think there's a market for violence and vulgarity. At least big enough to make back 20-40 mil. But it's a hit or miss business.

Thanks! Was he the pilot? I'm a little fuzzy on the details.

No, Tim Burton is too wierd for Harry Potter. I like Tim but in a certain way all of his movies are identical, that might have something to do with him always using Danny Elfman for the soundtrack and always finding a roll for Peewee Herman. But if Tim did a Harry Potter movie it would turn out to be a live action version of Nightmare Before Christmas, which would probaby be a good movie, but not a good Harry Potter movie. The preview I've seen of his Wonka remake is frankly disturbing.

DRAMA without a bunch of cussing... Strange that you would focus on that, given your screen name!
I think it's pretty funny, though. ;^)

Yes it is. As a kid I always liked the movie but it really falls apart when he goes into space. The special effects are just awful. The segments on Earth with the kid playing the arcade game are fairly well done though.
Plus kids still like video games so its not totally out of date.

Daily revenue per screen week of 3 January: $ 97 How'd they accomplish this without Kevin Costner?
