California man had mad cow symptoms

RIVERSIDE, Calif., Jan 06, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Health officials have ruled out the human version of mad cow disease in a California death, but a neurologist said the man had symptoms of the fatal disease.

Patrick Hicks, 49, died late last year in Colton, Calif., and his neurologist, Dr. Ron Bailey of Riverside Medical Center in Riverside suspected possible variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease, a fatal condition humans can contract from eating beef products infected with the mad cow pathogen.

"Clinically, the case did look like it was variant CJD -- no question about that," Bailey told UPI.

However, he said, the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center in Cleveland concluded in late December that Hicks had a similar disease called sporadic CJD, which is not thought to be due to contaminated beef.

NPDPSC said it could not comment on Hicks' final diagnosis.

Bailey questions how NPDPSC arrived at the diagnosis because he doesn't think enough testing was done to rule out vCJD.

Bailey has additional concerns because the manner in which Hicks' brain was preserved makes it impossible to carry out additional tests that would've helped determine whether he had vCJD or CJD.

"Some questions remain as far as I'm concerned," Bailey said.

I'm trying to remember the title of that book a few years back that predicted mass death over decades for millions of people. Well, like the killer bees a hideous plague of variantCJD might be just around the corner...

That said, I do think the practice of adding ground up cattle to cattle feed is an inexcusably bad idea. Has that practice in fact been stopped? Prions do have terrifying potential, being as they are all but indestructible and theoretically can easily make the species jump.

And just think if we ease trade restrictions further with Canada and Central and South America, as we already have with fruits made with pesticides and fertilized with human waste.

But about that book. Now I think if I remember correctly, it was right about that figure. In fact, I can state with a great deal of certainly that millions of people have indeed died over the past few decades. And that trend is expected to continue well into the future until the Second Coming.

That's why Terminal Services were around long before Microsoft Windows Server...

I was unaware that this link had been proved. Many scientists do believe that the emergence of v.C.J.D. is related to the emergence of B.S.E. and its transmission into the food-chain but I have not heard of proof, v.C.J.D. and B.S.E. news gets good coverage in the U.K. as well.

There has been a ban on animal based protein for several years. That's why the positive BSE animals here and in Canada were older cattle, before the ban was instituted.

And they were dairy cows as well, not beef cattle. The North American continent is well suited to grow enough plant based protein to be used for animal feed. Such was not the case in Europe with it's smaller land mass, hence the more wide spread cases there.

Canada has a much more extensive animal ID system than we do, they are at least 4 years ahead with that database. There is no problem with importing Canadian beef.

After doing a little research various opinions emerge. Most of the data I found is not exactly updated.

I am in no way qualified to say either way.
