I wonder what American life expectancy would be if the profit motive had been prohibited in the drug industry from day one, and all innovation had been the responsibility of government bureaucracy? I'd have to guess that those greedy drug companies are responsible for at least a 10-15 year increase in average life expectancy.
One of the key ways that you can measure the additional years that medical care (including pharmaceuticals) brings is to look at life expectancy after age 65. We do all right in that category.
