The Dem post-election soul searching continues. This morning, Katie Couric conducted an extended, two-part interview with noisome filmmaker and left-wing activist Michael Moore. And while Moore clearly intended to include Katie when he spoke of "our side," and while Katie never declined the reference, it was also obvious that Couric feels that Moore is part of the Dems' problem.
Moore's fundamental argument was that there is nothing wrong with the Dem party. When Katie suggested the Dems have perhaps lost touch with basic American values, Moore contended that to the contrary the American people agree with Dem policies, offering abortion, gun control and the environment as issues on which Americans tend to favor Dem positions over GOP ones.
The only problem, in this movie director's opinion, is the way the message is presented and in the personality of the candidate. According to Moore, the Republicans successfully used scare tactics, suggesting that terrorism is a real problem (it's not?) that could kill people at any moment. And whereas Moore spent months disparaging W, now he portrays him as a likeable "Gilligan-lite" character with whom people identify.
Moore suggested that the Dems need to find likeable candidates, and threw out a number of names, including Oprah, Tom Hanks, Obama and various members of the Kennedy clan.
Katie wasn't buying, and her personal antipathy toward Moore was obvious. Recall that back during the DNC, when Moore invited Katie to accompany him to that night's convention activities, Couric gave him the classic sorority girl brush-off: "sorry, I'm busy. I'm arranging my sock drawer."
Katie suggested that Moore was part of the Dem problem, not the solution. She alluded to his vitriolic nature, quoted some of the very nasty things he had had to say about W, and in the unkindest cut of all, suggesting that the beached-whale-like Moore "embodied" the problems of the Dem party.
Moore threw in a stock line about how he "loved" America. Right. This from the guy who traipsed around Europe deriding his compatriots as "the dumbest people in the world."
Turning to his next film, which will focus on (read: attack) the drug industry, Katie asked whether Moore was willing to give the drug industry any credit for curing various diseases, or whether to the contrary he saw them as "pure evil."
"Pure evil," was Moore's unequivocal response. Putting in a plug for socialism, he asserted that health care was a right, and that "the profit motive should be entirely removed" from the area. That's right, the profit motive, the driving force that has brought us virtually all of the world's innovations in every field including health care, should be abolished, to be replaced by government bureaucracy.
In any case, Katie and Moore's conversation epitomized the kind of frustrated thrashing in which Dems around the country continue to engage.
By all means, let the unshaved, elephantine Moore continue to be the face of the Democrat party!
Then I say, keep it up, Michael, ol' chap!
Katie Couric isn't a very good rep for the Dems, either. Denzel Washington left her speachless several months ago. She can dish it but not take it.
Then, I would hope that we can cut a deal with Moore: my industry will talk with him, as long as he swears never to use any drugs that our research has produced.
Finally, there is a huge billboard near Times Square (the west side of Seventh Ave. just north of 49th St.) dedicated to the Today Show. Above their pictures it says: "America's First Family"
We should write them and tell them that's obnoxious. The Bushes are America's First Family.

MM says "the profit motive should be entirely removed" [from the healthcare industry]. And of course it should be removed from the oil & gas industry, too! Mention, however, "the profit motive" as regards trial lawyers or the movie industry and we've got an entirely different story, don't we?
I am so sick of MM, and I'm hoping a lot of other people are, too.
What a coincidence! I was recently thinking that seeing mock-umentaries is a right and the profit motive should be entirely removed from the area! ;-)
If he is, (and I'm not saying he is) it would be a brilliant move on Rove's part.
Moore energized the Bush base more so than Kerry's base.
First, thank you for writing up substantial reviews, rather than "Hey! Did you see what Katie said to Michael Moore??" like too many do.
Second, this really reminds me of what Ann Coulter just said:
"I’m rooting for the faction of the Democratic Party—like Nancy Pelosi, quoted in yesterday’s New York Times, and I think this is the dominant faction—taking the position that our ideas are fine. That’s right, class, do not change anything about what we believe. We’ve just got to package the wine in new bottles. We need a new way of delivering our message, but the message is perfect! We just need to advertise RU-486 at NASCAR or something—that’ll do the trick!"

Tom Hanks wants no part of this asshole and lemme tell you something else...the drug companies are indeed price gouging scumbags but they do help and cure tens of millions of people a day in this country and save lives. They will bury Moore at the end of the day and when it comes to saving his life...I wonder if Moore will demand some of those same drugs from those companies he is trying to smear?
The clock is ticking on Moore's fame and heart.

A very happy and healthy New Year to you too, PB. I wonder what American life expectancy would be if the profit motive had been prohibited in the drug industry from day one, and all innovation had been the responsibility of government bureaucracy? I'd have to guess that those greedy drug companies are responsible for at least a 10-15 year increase in average life expectancy.
Robert Kennedy was the last best hope for that family. He would have made a good president.
It's unfortunate that the entire Kennedy clan has embraced the dregs of socialism to promote themselves. Teddy is so devoid of intellect he should be the poster child for the intellectually deprived.
