Bush donates to tsunami relief

US President George W. Bush, who called on Americans this week to make a donation to help victims of the Asian tsunami, has contributed $US10,000 ($12,865) himself, the White House said today.

Mr Bush, whose wealth is estimated at some $US13 million ($16.72 million), on Tuesday asked "every American to contribute as they are able to do so".

The president was criticised for his initial reaction to the catastrophe when he pledged $US15 million ($19.3 million) from the United States, with some critics pointing out that this was less than half what will be spent on Mr Bush's inauguration.

The pledge has since risen to $US350 million ($450.28 million).

The president's personal donation comes two days after he enlisted former presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton to lead a nationwide appeal for assistance for the millions left homeless by tsunami that killed at least 145,000 people.

They say his wealth is valued that much but that includes the land of his ranch, investments, etc.

The $10K represents about 3% of his gross yearly salary. More than I or many others have contributed.

Sorry, George, you already "contributed" more than enough than for me.

Wonder what the reaction of those people would have been to an atomic attack on the USA

It's nice to see that the French/UN mentality on "fairness" of contributions is everywhere--every donation must include how it compares to the person's wealth. Funny how they don't include upkeep on his ranch, expenses, etc., just to make it fair...

Did the reporter contribute ten grand? Hmm, funny, the article doesn't say.

The president was criticised for his initial reaction to the catastrophe...

I am SO damn sick and tired of this theme the media keeps inserting into every story about the disaster. Sheesh! Enough already!!! All it's doing is making me recoil even more from giving a tinker's damn about the rest of the world.

Oh, what's funny is the fact that none of the librats can contribute (HAH! Like they WOULD!) because they'd look too much like they were following instead of leading. I.E. doing it just to try to one-up President Bush.

It doesn't take a financial analyst to determine that he is cheap.

Oh, please. Spare me your handwringing, newbie. The only thing cheap around here is the typical Leftist arguments you're making.

Germanys Schroeder also donated a good amount but it's not known how much. I guess it's just a cultural thing. In the U:S they talk about the money and here they don't.
